The Carrollton Lions Club, a service
club whose mission is to help others, was
begun in 1933 when the nation’s people
were in a lot * of need. The
unemployment rate at that time was 25
percent. A recent example of this club
stepping up to the plate to meet a local
need was the building of a playground at
the Carrollton City Park on the corner
of North Park and Spring streets that can
be enjoyed both by able-bodied and
disabled children.
A defining cause of the Lions Clubs
International is preventing blindness,
restoring eyesight, and improving eye
care throughout the world. Since its
founding, the Carrollton Lions Club has
contributed to visually impaired students
in the schools, providing them with
Braille literature and new technology.
Since 1950, the Carrollton club has
contributed to the Georgia Lighthouse
for-the Blind. For the past 20 years,.it has
sponsored an annual Christmas party at
Central Middle School during which
visually impaired and other special
students receive gifts that make their lives
easier. Longtime member Daniel Jackson
has been the chair of this project since
1987.
In its first year of existence, the
Carrollton Lions Club conducted a
survey of blind people in the area,
furnishing them with white canes;
presented its first scholarship; graded
four tennis courts for West Georgia
College; sponsored an anti-malaria
campaign in Carrollton schools;
sponsored a college basketball game;
purchased new furniture for the
Carrollton Clinic; and contributed the
receipts of a baseball game played with
another civic club to a fund for
developing and equipping a children’s
playground.
Over the decades since it was founded,
the club has assisted the Carrollton High
School Band, paying half the salary of its
first director for several years. It has also
assisted the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H
Club, Boys and Girls State, and other
youth groups. Tanner Hospital has
throughout its existence received
assistance from the club. The club has
always given to the Empty Stocking
Fund, the county fair, the health center,
and the Red Cross. It has contributed
both money and the time of its members
to build athletic fields and recreation
areas .Among them is the Lions Field,
which was built by Lions Club
volunteers.
To raise funds to finance these
activities, the Lions have sold mops and
brooms, light bulbs, and fruitcakes.
Replacing mop and broom sales as the
major annual fund raiser since 1992 is an
annual barbecue. Since 2003, the club has
also raised funds by holding an annual
golf tournament.
The Carrollton Lions Club has
sponsored the formation of Lions Clubs
Jn Bowdon, Whitesburg, Heard County,
Tallapoosa, Villa Rica, Temple; Fairfield,
Carrollton Evening, and West Georgia.
