The Carroll County Master Gardeners
story and photos by Carole Scott
Master Gardener programs are
volunteer programs affiliated with a land-
grant university and one of its cooperative
extension service offices. They are active
in all 50 states and four Canadian
provinces. Their function is to educate the
public about gardening and horticultural
issues. Nationally they provide about
5,000,000 volunteer hours of service to
their communities. Georgia’s land-grant
university is the University of Georgia.
The Georgia Master Gardeners
Association is a statewide 501C
corporation.
There are well over 100 members of the
Carroll County Master Gardeners
(CCMG) and an affiliated group, the
Friends of Master Gardeners. They share
their knowledge of horticulture and
experience with others through
educational gardening projects and by
using applied research and resources of
the University of Georgia, which trains
and certifies Master Gardeners. Members
of the Friends of Master Gardeners are not
certified, but they participate in CCMG
activities such as the annual Ag Fleritage
Days for 4th graders and the general
public, Mothers’ Day plant sale, and the
Christmas wreath sale.
Both the CCMG and the State Master
Gardener Association offer grants for
realistic projects to support a variety of not
for profit horticultural projects. The
project should involve the community in
gardening and makes a difference, even in
a small way, to Carroll County. Last year
the Carroll County Master Gardeners
made the following grants: Buffalo
Creek Trail Project- $1200; West Ga
Quilters for Quilt garden at Ag Center -
$1450; Whitesburg Library for gardens for
their community- $1500 (including
handicapped accessible teaching gardens);
Central Elementary School grounds
project - $500; Carrollton Jr. Nature Trail
- $1500; West Georgia library gardens for
patrons -$900; Temple High School
Grounds- $1500; Rapha Clinic
beautification project *- $150. An
application for a 2011 grant is located at
/www.ugaextension.com/carroU/anr/Maste
rGardenerPage Applications from non
profit organizations, including schools, are
welcome.
Geoigia’s Master Gardeners
contributed 217,000 volunteer hours
valued at an estimated $4.3 to their
communities last year. Without Georgia’s
Master Gardeners, many of the University
of Georgia’s College of Agriculture and
Environmental Sciences Cooperative
Extension offices would not have been
able to provide the level of services its
clients expect. Master Gardeners’
contribution to the Cooperative Extension
offices is particularly important as a result
of recent and continuing budget
cutting.The Cooperative Extension is a
statewide educational organization that
brings research-based education directly to
individuals, families and communities and
conducts a 4H program in local schools.
Carroll County’s Extension office is
located at the Ag-Ed Center on Newnan
Road in Carrollton. Carroll County’s
Master Gardeners maintain a sizeable
garden there, and this is also where they
hold their meetings and conduct annual
Mother’s Day plant sales, Ag Heritage
Days, and Christmas Wreath sales. The
2010 Carroll County Master
Gardeners president Vicki Loyd
most recent of CCMG beautification
projects at the Ag-Ed Center is a quilt
garden located in front of the Center.
CCMG financed a renovation of the
Center’s kitchen and built a storage area
for the group within the Center. It also
built a bam next to their garden, gazebo,
and water feature to store their equipment
in.
To become a Master Gardener you have
to take a 20-session course in gardening.
