DAR: Abraham Baldwin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution

Carrollton’s Abraham Baldwin History. Days at local schools. On
Chapter of the Daughters of the February 19, 2011, the Chapter presented
American Revolution (DAR) promotes good citizen and American history
school programs and participates in local awards to several local students: Cole
programs such as Ag Heritage Days at Allen Sibley and Madison Runyan,
Bowdon High School; “Alex”
Cartwright and McKenzie Butler,
Bremen High School; Nicole Hasbun
and Caitlin Wise, Carrollton High
School; Jacob Stewart and Walt Turner,
Central High School; Ashleigh Nicole

An American history essay award was
presented to Noah Howard, Jonesville
Middle School.
The Abraham Baldwin Chapter was
founded in 1953 under the direction of
Ruth Brock Kramer. One of the 111
chapters in the Georgia State Society of
the national DAR, it has an active
membership of 76. A non-profit
organization, it depends on donations,
dues, and fund-raisers to support its
many projects. Its officers are: Tina
Clune, Regent; Sherryll Miles, First Vice
Regent; Diane Brittain, Second Vice
Regent; Gwyn Chesnut, Chaplain; Joan
Finch, Corresponding Secretary; Sara
Boyd, Recording Secretary; Johnnie
Baldwin, Treasurer; Violette Denney,
Registrar; Julia Johnson, Historian; Betty
deVane, Librarian.
The National Society of DAR was
incorporated by Congressional Charter
in 1896. Some state chapters already
existed at that time. Each year the DAR
conducts a national American history
essay contest among students in grades 5
through 8. One of the schools it supports
because it serves special needs is Georgia’s
Berry College. The DAR awards
$150,000 annually in scholarships to
