SAR: Casimir Pulaski Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution
by Carole Scott
Chartered by the National Society of
the Sons of the American Revolution
(SAR) to serve Carroll, Douglas, Heard,
and Haralson counties, the Casimir
Pulaski Chapter of the SAR is the
sponsor of several programs honoring
individuals for outstanding and unusual
patriotic achievement. Every year it
presents a Bronze JROTC medal to
outstanding Junior ROTC cadets. It also
honors local public safety officials (law
enforcement, fire, and EMS) for
outstanding service and recognizes
outstanding Eagle Scouts. It also assists
veterans in Veterans hospitals; conducts
an annual orations and essay contest; and
it places markers at the grave sites of
Revolutionary War patriots and
conducts appropriate ceremonies at these
sites. It observes patriotic anniversaries
and cooperates with the local chapters of
the National Society of the Daughters of
the American Revolution and other
hereditary and veteran organizations in
promoting patriotism.
About 25,000 male descendants of
those patriots who, during the American
Revolution rendered unwavering and
loyal service to the winning of our
freedom from England, are active
members of The National Society of the
SAR. The National Society was founded
on April 30, 1889 and was incorporated
by jn act of Congress on June 9, 1906. It
is a non-profit, non-secret, non-political
organization.
The Casimir Pulaski Chapter was
chartered on October 13, 2001 by the
National Society SAR as a local chapter
in the Georgia Society SAR. Currently
there are 28 members in the Pulaski
Chapter. Officers of the Chapter are:
George Wheeless, President, Dr. Mike
Campbell, Secretary/Treasurer, Dr. Bob
Claxton, Chaplain, Greg Goggans,
Historian, and Henry Dreyer, Sergeant-
at-Arms.
”The objects of this Society are
declared to be patriotic, historical, and
educational; to unite and promote
fellowship among the descendants of
those who sacrificed to achieve the
independence of the American people, to
inspire them and the community-at-large
with a more profound reverence for the
principles of the government founded by
our forefathers; to foster true patriotism;
to maintain and extend the institutions of
American freedom.”
The Casimir Pulaski Chapter meets at
7:00 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each
month at the Carroll County Athletic
Complex Gym at 1201 Stripling Chapel
Rd. in Carrollton. In April, July, and
December its meetings are held a

On March 19, 2010, the Chapter
hosted a grave marker dedication service
for Captain William Clinton at the New
Hope Cemetery in Villa Rica.
Captain Clinton was born in Virginia
and moved with his family to the
Kershaw District of South Carolina
when he was a young boy. Records
indicate that he enlisted with a regiment
of South Carolina Regulars during the
George Wheeless, president
second year of the War. He served
throughout the War until it ended in
1783. He rose through the ranks from
private, to sergeant, to lieutenant.
Around 1783 he joined the South
Carolina Militia as a Captain. He fought
in the battles of Stono Ferry, Hanging
Rock, Camden, and Eutaw Springs.
