"Who's Carroll? 2011" Who are our civic/service clubs?
SCV: Forrest’s Escort Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans
by Carole Scott
The restoration of Wick’s Tavern, the
oldest commercial building in Carroll
County, is the handiwork of the mem
bers of Villa Rica’s Forrest’s Escort
Camp of the Sons of Confederate
Veterans (SCV). To move this circa 1830
building from its original location to 212
West Wilson Street in Villa Rica required
that it be disassembled. The members of
the Forrest Escort Camp reassembled it
piece by piece, repaired it, and built it a
new stone chimney. Behind the Tavern
they built a new, barn-like building
where various groups from time to time
and the Camp itself and the Retired
Police Officers of West Georgia, the
West Georgia Shrine Club, and a Bible
study group hold their regular monthly
meetings.
The Tavern is a living history
museum where War Between the States
artifacts are on display. The Camp’s
members present living history programs
at local schools that include the display of
authentic 1860s medical tools and small
arms. Every Christmas the Camp partici
pates in the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for
Tots program that raises money for toys
for needy children. Camp members par
ticipate in parades and local festivals such
as Gold Rush Days in Villa Rica and
Founders Day in Temple. The Camp
also participates in the annual Ag
Heritage Days at the Ag Center in
Carrollton.
The Camp is well known for its work
in cleaning up neglected and abandoned
family and church cemeteries in Carroll
and Douglas counties. Every year prior
to Confederate Memorial Day on April
26 Camp members decorate the graves of
over 600 Confederate Veterans buried in
Carroll and Douglas counties. They also
decorate the graves of the few Union
Army veterans buried in these counties.
Unmarked graves are marked, and any
damage to graves that is discovered is
