The Carrollton Civitan Club
by Jessica Dial-Kirk
Civitans are everyday citizens who
come together in communities around
the world to socialize, learn and serve
their neighbors. Civitans are devoted to
improving the lives of children and
adults with developmental disabilities.
Their flagship program is the
University of Alabama- Birmingham
Civitan International Research Center,
the first institution of its kind in the
United States to be solely dedicated to
research of developmental disabilities.
The Carrollton Civitan Club just
celebrated their 50th anniversary in
October 2009. Recent local projects
include, building a park and a ball field,
grants to special education teachers,
scholarships for Special Education majors
at the University of West Georgia,
scholarships for children to attend Camp
Big Heart for special needs children and
adults, and a Christmas party for the
special needs children.
Teachers with limited budgets may
purchase supplies collected by Civitans
for their classrooms.
Their major fundraiser is selling pecans
each fall.
Carrollton Civitan Club meets the
first and third Thursday of each month
at Sunnyside Cafe, Carrollton.
