Department of Driver Services (DDS)
Changes License Labeling/Class
from press release
Department of Driver Services (DDS)
has implemented a license Class change
for drivers of non-commercial motor vehi
cles. In Georgia , vehicles are classified
according to the type of license required to
operate them, which is based on their
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).
Presently, Class A and B licenses, may be
either Commercial or Non-Commercial.
Effective immediately, anyone who previ
ously would have been issued a non-com
mercial Class A driver’s license will be
changing to a non-commercial Class E
license. Non-commercial Class B driver’s
licenses will be changing to a non-com
mercial Class F driver’s license.
Distinguishing the commercial and non
commercial license types will help clarify
the types of vehicles each driver is eligible
to operate, simplify DDS’ business proc
esses and ultimately improve customer
service.
The qualifications, testing procedures
and issuance process for each class of
license will remain the same. Vehicles
which require a non-commercial Class A
or B (now E and F) license are agricultural
vehicles, military vehicles, and firefighter
/emergency vehicles.
The GVWR information for these two
types of licenses is fisted below:
Class E: Any combination of vehicles
with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds,
provided the GVWR of the vehicle being
towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Class F: Any single vehicle with a
GVWR in excess of 26,001 pounds or any
such vehicle towing a vehicle with a
GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
No action is required for those custom
ers who already hold a non-commercial
Class A or B driver’s license. The DDS
will convert a non-commercial class A or
B to the appropriate E or F whenever each
customer comes in for his or her next
license renewal.
