The American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.
is an organization of mothers who have
lost a son or daughter in the service of
the United States. The group was
founded by Grace Darling Seibold,
whose son, George Vaughn Seibold, was
killed while serving in England with the
British Royal Flying Corps during
World War I. At the time, the United
States had neither an air force nor planes.
Grace, realizing that self contained
grief is self destructive, devoted her time
and efforts to working in the hospital
and extending friendship to other moth
ers whose sons had lost their lives in mili
tary service. She organized the group
with the purpose of comforting each
other and giving care to hospitalized vet
erans confined in government hospitals
far from home.
The organization was named after the
Gold Star that families hung in their win
dows in honor of the deceased veteran.
During the early days of World War I, a
Blue Star was used to represent each per
son in the military service of the United
States. As service people began to lose
their lives, the Gold Star was substituted
and superimposed upon the Blue Star,
entirely covering it, honoring the person
for his supreme sacrifice.
On January 5, 1929, the organization
was incorporated under the laws of the
District of Columbia as a nondenomina-
tional, nor-profitable, and non-political
organization. One June 12, 1984, the
Ninety Eighth Congress granted the
