MOMS Club of Villa Rica:
“Moms Offering Moms Support”
by Prissi Sullivan
MOMS Club of Villa Rica is a local
chapter of International MOMS Club,
“Moms Offering Moms Support.” It is a
non-profit support group for stay-at-
home mothers and mothers working
part-time in the Carroll County area.
They also strive to make a difference in
the community and to set a positive
example for their children through mean
ingful service projects.
Mary Barnes James in Simi Valley
started the organization in 1983, due to
her desire to meet other at-home mothers
in a safe environment and to find play
mates for her two preschool daughters.
She also wanted to encourage mothers
who wanted to stay at home with their
children to do so.
he loose association had to become a
corporation and to register as a nonprofit
organization to become a successful
national organization. This would pro
tect the volunteers from liability suits and
would ensure that the goals and princi
pals of the MOMS Club were protected
through the years. The club also regis
tered as an IRS nonprofit charity to keep
help, not profits, as its focus.
By the spring of 1987, there were 12
local chapters across the country; by
1988, 16.. 1992 marked phenomenal
growth nationally-112 chapters in 30
states. The MOMS Club is still the only
national support for all at-home mothers.
In addition, it is the largest support group
for at-home mothers and the only one
registered with the IRS as a publicly sup
ported charity. There are 950 chapters
with 45,000 members.
Donna McDermott started the MOMS
Club of Villa Rica in June of 2003. She
had been a member of the MOMS Club
of Kernersville, North Carolina for a
year before moving to Georgia. She was
then a member of the Powder Springs
group -for two years. She moved to Villa
Rica in 2001 and saw a need for such a
group in this area. The first meeting was
held in June, 2003, with six moms in
attendance. The club now has 25 mem
bers, spread between Villa Rica, Temple,
Carrollton, and Bremen. Mary Necula
currently serves as president of the Villa
Rica Club, with Jodi Ahlquist serving as
treasurer along the membership vice
president, Jill Wolverton.
MOMS Club of Villa Rica supports
the MOMS Fund, which helps mothers
in need during natural disasters (such as
Hurricane Katrina). The club also does
quarterly service projects, such as collect
ing canned good for the Carroll County
Food Bank. They gave Christmas cards
and caroling performances at Ashbrook
Village, a local independent and assisted
living facility in Villa Rica. Additionally,
they support the Pregnancy Resource
Center. They have spearheaded a land
scaping project at Fullerville Baptist
Church and sponsored a holiday party
with the seniors at Villa Rica Senior
Center. They also took part in and sup
ported the Komen 3-day for the Cure
Atlanta Race.
"Monthly activities for both mothers
and their children are scheduled, such as
play-dates, field trips, story times, group
walks, and monthly Moms Night Out. A
full calendar is set for spring break, April
4-8. Monday of that week, moms and
children will tour Fire Station #24 in
Carrollton at 10:30 a.m., while on
Wednesday they will participate in a
sports play day at Temple Recreation
