Widened road to allow better
flow of school traffic
Carrollton City Mayor Wayne Gamer,
along with City Manager Casey Coleman,
City Council members Mandy Maierhofer
and Gerald Byrd, City School Board
Member Jimmy Pope, Carroll County
Commission Chairman Bill Chappell,
Public Works Superintendent Charles
Pope, and District Commissioner Trent
North recently cut the ribbon to officially
open the newly widened and improved
Ben Scott Boulevard, Carrollton.
The much-needed improvement to the
side road will allow easier and smoother
morning and afternoon school traffic flow.
All of the city’s schools - elementary,
middle, junior high, high school - and
athletic fields are located on this one road.
Traffic has backed up onto the bypass
twice a day during the school year for
several years, as well as during fall
football games. Widening and lane
addition will help offset the traffic
overflow and decrease the time it takes to
drop students off or pick them up.

Budget amendments
The Carroll County Board of
Commissioners met at 6 p.m. on Tuesday,
July 19, 2011, in the Commission
Chambers at the David Perry
Administration Building in Carrollton for
their regular meeting. At the meeting, the
board voted to advertise an amendment to
the FY 2011-12 budget that adds back
items that were voted down as attached
amendments at the previous BOC
meeting.
In June, District 5 Commissioner Kevin
Jackson made a motion to approve the
fiscal year budget with amendments
attached that removed two
communications coordinator positions, a
grant to Re-Entry Inc. (a program
designed to help prisoners re-enter society
- formerly under the control of the
NAACP), and a project manager position.
The commissioners voted 4-3 to approve
the budget with these amendments.
At the July 19 meeting, however,
District 4 Commissioner John Wilson
made a motion to advertise for an
amendment to the budget that would add
back these items and increase the
community development budget by
$97,527 while decreasing the contingency.
District 6 Commissioner George
Chambers, who had voted to pass the
budget with these items removed in
attached amendments in June, seconded
the motion. Wilson, Chambers,
Commission Chairman Bill Chappell, and
District 1 Commissioner Trent North
voted in favor, while District 2
Commissioner Vicki Anderson and
District 3 Commissioner Ashley Hendrix
voted against it. Commissioner Jackson
was not present at the meeting.
