Carrollton Mayor Wayne Garner
Wayne was elected as Mayor of Carrollton, Georgia in November of 2003 and ran
unopposed for a second term in November of 2007.
Prior to his election as mayor, Wayne served in the Georgia State Senate from 1980 until
1993. During the time he served in the Senate, he chaired the Senate Committee on
Corrections for approximately ten years. He was later named majority leader of the Senate
and ultimately, President Pro Tempore. In April of 1993, Wayne was appointed to the
Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole by then Governor Zell Miller, where he served as
Chairman. In December of 1995, Governor Miller named Wayne to the position of
Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Corrections, where he served for approximately
five years.
Upon leaving the Department of Corrections, KPM/PEAT Marwick conducted a forensic
audit and said Commissioner Garner had built a prison system without peer in the
Southeast.
Wayne is now President of the Garner Group, a governmental affairs firm located in
Carrollton, Georgia, which conducts business in Georgia, Alabama, and Washington, D.C. Wayne has served as Chairman of
the Stone Mountain Authority; a member of the West Georgia Regional Airport Authority; and as a Board Member of Camp
Sunshine.
