One local favorite - and former chairman - has thrown his hat in the ring in hopes of regaining the position. The race for Carroll County Commission Chairman includes incumbent Marty Smith (Republ ican) and former commission chairman Bill Chappell (Republican). Chappell lost to Smith in 2012, but said he is eager to re-claim his standing as head of the county commission. See VOTE MAY 24th page 43 County school board of education: seven candidates for the three seats Bill Chappell Commission Chairman Lee Powers Commission District 5 Dale Williams Commission District 5 - CANDIDATES Bernice Brooks BOE District 1 Rob Cleveland BOE District 1 Alan Martinez BOE District 3 Bob Pinckney BOE District 3 by Prissi Sullivan The Carrollton/Carroll County League of Women Voters hosted a candidate forum at Holt-Bishop Justice Center in Villa Rica on April 11, 2016 at 7 p.m. Bernice Brooks and Rob Cleveland, contenders for the District 1 seat on the school board, and C. Alan Martinez and Dr. Robert Pinckney, candidates for District 3 seat on the school board, were present. Dr. Bruce Lyon, assisted by Kathie Lyon, was the moderator. The four candidates agreed on the importance of educa tion to the community. Pinckney views education as a business and thinks a large problem in Carroll County is teacher morale. Martinez feels that the perception of Villa Rica schools needs to be improved. Cleveland thinks there have been vast improve ments over the past 4 years. See COUNTY BOE page 27 Commission District 5: two candidates by Prissi Sullivan The League of Women Voters hosted a forum for the candidates for Carroll County Board of Commissioners District 5 on April 12, 2016 in Whitesburg, Georgia. Approximately 50 citizens were in atten dance to hear Dale Williams and Lee Powers enumerate their qualifications and to answer questions. Powers classes himself as a cattle farmer, who wants to preserve the quality of life in Carroll County. He loves the fanning indus try and wants to keep the area agriculUiral. He wants growth, but “the right kind of growth.” He is also a commercial building builder and has been in business since 1994.
