Now open for care: Tanner
Medical Center/East Alabama
It was a bittersweet day in the
town of Wedowee - and certainly,
the sweetness prevailed. At 7 a.m.
Central Time on Tuesday, Nov.
14, 2017, the lights came up and
the covers were pulled from the
bright red “EMERGENCY” signs
at Tanner Medical Center/East
Alabama while just more than a
mile away, staff at Wedowee
Hospital waited for test results and
prepared to transfer the hospital’s
last couple of patients.
By mid-morning, the call went
out on the emergency services
radio: “Last call for Wedowee
Hospital. For 64 years, they have
served this area with professional
care and selfless compassion.
Their dedication to family and
community can never be forgot
ten. Wedowee Hospital has now
answered their last call.”
In the minutes before the first
patient arrived on transfer, hospi
tal staff joined hands near the
ambulance bay and bowed their
heads in prayer, asking for guid-

Southwire has issued an
announcement that the company
updated its evaluation related to
dioxin testing from 2007, and has
stated that the conclusions are
consistent with results the com
pany has previously shared: that
dioxin levels in Southwire study
participants look more like levels
in the general U.S. population
than levels in other groups with
known exposures to dioxins and
related compounds.
While shutting down its copper
smelter in Carrollton, Georgia in
2000, Southwire clean-up teams
found traces of dioxin in the air
filtering system. Southwire then
commissioned a study to measure
the levels of dioxin and related
compounds in the blood of current
and former employees of its cop
per smelter.
This update comes as a result of
published national blood testing
data from the Centers for Disease

newest resource for
local activities/events
Carroll County Sheriff Terry Langley (front row, second from left) has always had a strict
policy concerning facial hair. It was not allowed. However, in November Sheriff Langley came
up with a unique fundraiser idea for some local charities. The Carroll County’s Sheriff’s
Department would allow personnel to grow beards in exchange for donating to charity. Each
deputy would make a donation of $50 to a charity starting on November 5th and they will be
allowed to keep their beards until December 31st.
So the contest began! Razors were dropped by 60 deputies bringing the total to $3,000.
Impact West GA is one of the local charities that received some of these funds. Thank you,
deputies, for your generosity during this season of giving!
