Top two priorities: no to landfill in Haralson County, yes on passing Constitutional Carry Bill
by Wayne J. Reynolds
The Georgia General Assembly, one of the
country’s largest state legislatures, went into ses
sion Monday, January 2, 2022. State
Representative Tyler Paul Smith, District 18, sat
down with StarNews to discuss his priorities for
this session. Smith said, “My number one priority
is getting the landfill bill passed that was intro
duced last session. I am opposed to the proposed
landfill in the Waco area. This bill as currently
constmcted would prohibit landfills being added
within 50 miles of current landfills.”
“My focus, as always, are the citizens of my
district,” he said. “The 18th District currently cov
ers Bremen, Waco, Tallapoosa, Buchanan, and
parts of Carroll County and parts of the city of
Carrollton. When I face reelection in the fall, as
currently configured, the district will change a lit
tle as I will lose parts of Carroll and the city, and
pick up more of Haralson and a little in Paulding
County. Each district in the state will each repre
sent around 59,000 residents.”
Rep. Smith’s second priority, he said, is to see
that the Constitutional Carry Bill passes. This bill,
among other items, would mean citizens would
not need a permit to carry a concealed firearm.
“There are several proposed bills, so I am not
sure what the final details may or may not
include.”
“My third priority is expanded funding for
mental health. Carroll County Mental Health
