The EMA Digest: Weather Lore
“A quick note about things you should know in emergencies”
By Martha Anne McCarty
Upson EMA Director
Something a bit different today.
What does mother nature tell us about
the weather? Plenty of old proverbs can
give us clues about the coming weather.
•Red Sky in the Morning, Sailors
Take Warning.
Red Sky at Night, Sailors Delight.
A red sky in the morning indicates
that storms and rain can be expected
within 24 hours, whereas a red sky at
night indicates clear skies for the next
24 hours.
• When the Dew is in the Grass, Rain
will Never Come to Pass.
When Grass is Dry at Morning
Light, Look for Rain before the Night.
Dew forming overnight indicates
fair weather, whereas no dew forming
indicates rain.
•A summer fog for fair, a winter fog
for rain.
Ground fog in summer indicates fair
weather, whereas ground fog in winter
forecasts rain.
•Clear nights - cold days
This is especially true in winter,
early spring, and late fall, and especially
after a rain.
•Whenforests murmur and moun
tains roar, close your windows and
shut the door.
When sound travels long distances,
expect rain soon.
•When ditch and pond affect the
nose, look for rain and stormy blows.
When storms draw near, odors in
crease.
•Trees showing the undersides of
their leaves foretell rain.
•"When High meets Low it doth
blow."
Meaning, when high pressure meets
low pressure, strong winds are forecast
soon.
•If a circle forms ‘round the moon,
it will rain very soon.
Ice crystals high in the atmosphere
appear as a halo around the moon, in
dicating approaching rainy weather.
•The Fishing Proverb (as best I re
member it):
When wind blows from the east, it
is neither fit for man nor beast.
When wind blows from the north,
do not go forth.
When wind blows from the west, it is
best.
When wind blows from the south,
the bait will go straight to his mouth.
Reasonings: Easterly winds usually
bring cool, quirky weather. Northerly
winds bring the cold. Westerly winds
bring fair weather. Southerly winds in
dicate good weather.
•The higher the clouds, the better
the weather.
•“Some folks are weatherwise, but
most are otherwise.” -Ben Franklin,
late 1700s
