Courtesy of T-U Schools U-L NJROTC Wins Rifle Semifinals On March 4, the Upson-Lee High School NJROTC rifle team traveled to North Cobb High School to compete in the Georgia High School Associa tion’s rifle semifinals, adding another win to the books by shooting a team score of 1,134. U-L’s Emily Goggins was the high est team shooter with an overall score of 291, followed by Jada Dunbar (283), James Mayer (280), Michael Valliere (278), and Jerry Cleveland (274)- Since the North Cobb team scored a total 1,075 points (and high shooter Sofia Brisbane shooting 286), The Knights competed in the GHSA finals on March 16. Participating bands must choose three songs from a list provided by GMEA officials and perform on stage for judges. Following performances, band members are provided a piece of music to sight read and have six mi nutes to prepare before performing for judges. Band ratings for both categories in clude Superior (outstanding perform ance), Excellence (unusually good performance in many respects, but not worthy of highest rating due to minor defects), Good (a good performance, but not outstanding), and Fair (a perform ance that shows some obvious weak nesses, generally week and uncertain). The ULHS band program is led by director Cameron Born. Submitted ULMS Band Rated Excellent at LGPE The Upson-Lee Middle School honor band received an overall “excel lence” rating in stage performance and sight-reading categories during the 2024 Large Group Performance Evaluation event on March 13 at Northside High School in Warner Robins. LGPE is a performance evaluation sanctioned by the Georgia Music Edu cators Association, and 2024 marks the second year ULMS has attended since COVID-19 put a pause on the annual evaluation. During the event, Alex Mackey won first place in extemporaneous speaking (international topic). Mac key’s first-place finish qual ified him for the GHSA State AAA Literary Cham pionships, scheduled Sat urday, March 16 at Bremen High School in Warner Robins. Aisha Derico received second place in extempora neous speaking (domestic topic), and fourth place in the personal essay category. Jules Passmore took third place in literary analysis essay, while Sarah Salter placed fourth in argumen tative essay. Carrie Brown, Gabrielle Mann, and Nicole Parks won second place in the girls’ trio competition. Tripp Brown, Brady Sorrow, Ian McLane, and Mackey won second place in the boys’ quartet cate gory- Brown also placed third place in the boys’ solo com petition. Results from the March 16 championships were un available at press time. U-L Chess Team Secures Win The Upson-Lee High School chess team recently traveled to Givinnett County for a chess tourna ment, securing a ivin over The Marist School, ac cording to ULHS officials.
