Page16A Searcy Spotlighted by Leadership Montgomery Upson native Shorron L. Searcy was chosen as the April spotlight of Leadership Montgomery, a program de signed for young profes sionals who work or live in Montgomery, Ala., who are passionate about improving the city. Searcy, raised in Lincoln Park, is married to Takeisha Searcy and has two children, Shayla and Decorian. For the past 21 years, Searcy has dedicated his ca reer to serving his com munity as a member of Montgomery Fire/Recue. Rising through the ranks throughout the years, he cur rently serves as the district fire chief. According to the spot light, community involve ment is crucial to Searcy for multiple reasons - it allows him to connect with those around him and build strong relationships within his com munity, creating a sense of belonging and support that is invaluable in times of need. Searcy said one of his greatest accomplishments is raising his two children into adulthood alongside his wife. As parents, they say they strive to instill strong values, work ethic, and a deep sense of responsibility in their chil dren. Graduates are community and economic devel opment professionals, elected officials, public servants, business leaders, educators, and engaged citizens from across Georgia, according to officials. Created in 1993, the academy assembles a cross-sec tion of experts, research-based curriculum, and re sources necessary for building a vibrant community. The academy features a cornerstone program, The Essen tials, a one-day program that provides attendees an op portunity to gain a unique understanding of the complexities of economic and community development on the local, regional, and state levels. Graduates of the program have completed The Es sentials, as well as at least three advanced courses that are designed to deep dive into specific topics derived from current needs, trends, and data. The academy’s board of directors represent public and private economic development organizations and agencies across Georgia. Georgia EMA and Georgia Power provide facilitators for the program on behalf of their members and stakeholders. The Georgia Depart ment of Community Affairs provides staff and resources to execute the program statewide. Since its inception, the academy has provided training for thousands of Geor gians. Kids Fishing Derby Set April 27 The City of Thomaston will host its annual Kids Fish ing Derby on April 27 at Greatest Generation Memorial Park, with a host of trophies and door prizes ready for the taking. To be held from 8-11 a.m. at the rear pond in the park, the derby is free for children. Registration opens at 8 a.m. on April 27, but pre-registration is encouraged. Fishing will start promptly at 8:30 a.m. Competitions will be held for age groups three to six, seven to 10, and 11 to 15. Awards will be presented between 11-11:30 a.m. Visit cityofthomaston.com/269/Public-Works to pre register through April 25. Children must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian 18 years or older. The adult or legal guardian helping the child fish must have a Georgia fishing license and agree to teach the child how to fish. Catch and re lease of fish is allowed. Each child should bring a fishing pole, stringer, tackle box, chair, and bait. Each child will be allowed to keep five fish only. Registration/waiver form must be completed by an adult or legal guardian before one can fish.
