‘Race for Grace’ 5K set for Saturday, honors teen who died

Boot Camp and Five Star
NTP are hosting a 5K
race in honor of Grace
Sheer on Saturday at
Veterans Memorial Park.
Sheer was a senior at
Dawson County High
School who lost her life
in a car wreck earlier
this year.
All proceeds from
the race will be
donated to the
Grace Sheer
Scholarship Fund.
The fund will pro
vide a scholarship
for one female ath
lete at Dawson County
High School who exem
plifies Sheer through her
work ethic, kindness and
dedication to not
only athletics,
but also academi
cally and with
her outstanding
character.
Individual
entry is $30 until
race day. A t-shirt
in your size is guaran
teed if you registered by
July 8, then are available
while supplies last.
If you don’t want a
t-shirt, registration is $25
until race day.
If you can’t make it on
the day, you can register
for a virtual 5K for $27.
Times must be submitted
by July 15.
Early packet pickup
will be held from 4 p.m.
to 7 p.m. July 13 at
Dawsonville Fit Body
Boot Camp in the Publix
shopping center.
Awards will go to the
top three overall males
and female finisher, to
the top three overall
master male and
females, to the overall
grand master (age 50 and
over), the overall senior
grand master (age 60 and
over) as well as other
age group awards.
Check-in opens at 7
a.m. July 14, and the 5K
starts at 8 a.m.

Man charged in death of woman he met at Rainbow gathering

An unidentified woman was
allegedly killed by a man she met
at the Rainbow Family of Living
Light gathering last week,
according to Lumpkin County
and Kentucky officials.
Joseph Bryan Capstraw, 20,
was arrested and charged with the
woman’s murder by the
Elizabethtown Police Department
in Kentucky. Capstraw told
authorities he met the woman
where the off-the-grid, counter
culture group had assembled in
the Bull Mountain area of the
Chattahoochee-Oconee National
Forest just outside of Dahlonega.
The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s
Office said Sunday the victim had
been identified but did not dis
close the name of the woman,
who apparently hitchhiked to
Kentucky with Capstraw from
the event. It is unclear where
Capstraw resides.
According to Kentucky media
reports, Capstraw allegedly told
police he blacked out and killed
the woman.
Elizabethtown police did not
answer a call for comment
Sunday.

County HR director earns certification

Danielle Yarbrough, human
resources director for Dawson
County Government, was presented
with her certification of Certified
Human Resources Manager during
the Georgia Local Government
Personnel Association’s spring con
ference June 12-15 in Augusta.
To achieve the certification,
Yarbrough completed 12 classes and
a learning project under the supervi
sion of a Carl Vinson Institute of
Government faculty member.
The certification program is the
only program in the state of Georgia
where local government employees
may become certified in the Human
Resources field. It is sponsored by
GLGPA in conjunction with the
Association County Commissioners
of Georgia and the Georgia
Municipal Association and is admin
istered by the University of Georgia’s
Carl Vinson Institute of Government.
The program is designed to
enhance the knowledge, skills and
abilities of those responsible for the
management and administration of
personnel systems in local govern
ment in Georgia.
