The award is presented by the national Motorsports Press Association. This is the first time that Elliott has won the award in NAS CAR’s premiere series after having won the award back to back in 2014 and 2015 when he drove in the Xfinity Series. The award was presented by Dale Earnhardt Jr .who, before retiring from active racing at the end of the 2017 season, had won the award 15 years in a row. Prior to Earnhardt Jr., Elliott’s father, Bill Elliott held the award for a record-setting 16 years. Winning the award comes on the back of a break-out season for 23-year-old Elliott as he recorded the first win of his career at Watkin’s Glen Aug. 5 and raced his way into the Chase for the Cup playoffs round of 8, picking up two more wins along the way at Dover International Speedway on Oct. 9 and Kansas Speedway on Oct. 21 to finish the season sixth overall. Elliott drives the No. 9 car for Hendricks Motorsports and was the only member of the team to post a victory in the 2018 campaign. Elliott joined the Sprint Car Series full time in 2016 when Hendricks Motorsports announced that he would drive the No. 24 car previously driv en by Jeff Gordon. In his debut at the Daytona 500, Elliott became the young est driver in Daytona to capture the pole with a qualifying speed of 196.341 mph. Community comes together for Christmas fun, charity By Jessica Taylor jtaylor@dawsonnews.com The rain on Saturday might have canceled the Dawsonville Christmas parade, but it wasn’t enough to stop hundreds of families from coming to Rock Creek Park to eat breakfast and meet the one and only Santa Claus. Dawson County Parks and Recreation hosted the annual Breakfast with Santa event Dec. 1, with proceeds from the event going to K.A.R.E. for Kids to make Christmas magic happen for under privileged children in Dawson County. “This event would not be possible without the efforts from the local businesses and organizations that took time out of their Saturday to fight the nasty weather and give back to our community,” said Buffie Hamil, programs and facilities coor dinator at the county parks and rec reation department. See Santa 18A Dawson County detention officer arrested for domestic violence By Allie Dean adean@dawsonnews.com A Dawson County detention officer has been placed on administrative leave after he was arrest ed for allegedly assaulting his wife over the week end. Richard Anthony, 45, of Woodstock was arrested Dec. 2 in Cherokee County on a battery charge after a family member called to report a domestic dispute between Anthony and his wife the night before, according to an inci dent report from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. According to the report, the family member stated over the phone that Anthony assaulted his wife the night of Dec. 1, leaving visible injuries and marks.
