The council voted with coun cil member Mark French opposed to increase the com pensation from $600 to $1,000 per month. The raise cannot go into effect for current Mayor Mike Eason and will instead go into effect after this year’s election cycle, or in other words become effec tive on Jan. 1, 2020. The approved version of the ordinance nixes any mention of increases to the base salary of city council members, which were included in the initial draft. Language that would increase council member pay by $100 a month was removed and the current base salary of $500 remains. Also removed was a pro posed increase in compensation for each city council meeting other than the first regular city council meeting of the month from $100 to $150. The mayor and council mem bers are each paid a monthly salary plus $100 for the second See Mayor 18A Grogan to run again after state court rules on case By Allie Dean adean@dawsonnews.com Former Dawsonville Mayor James Grogan has announced his intention to run for office again this fall after a Monday Georgia Supreme Court ruling on his case vs. the city of Dawsonville. The court issued a unan imous opinion Feb. 4 stat ing that while Grogan should not have to pay back the salary and bene fits he accrued during the months he spent appealing the city council’s decision to remove him from office, it would not reverse the decision of the Dawson County Superior Court that denied Grogan’s appeal and request for a new trial after his removal. Grogan, 76, was removed from office May 15, 2017 by a 3-1 vote of city council after an investigation into allegations he had misused city funds and violated the city charter. Grogan appealed the decision and contin ued to act as mayor until Oct. 9, 2017, when Superior Court Judge C. Andrew Fuller ruled in favor of the city and dismissed See Grogan 18A Grogan 3 kids among 5 hurt in wreck on Hwy. 136 By Allie Dean adean@dawsonnews.com A single-vehicle wreck last week left five people injured including three chil dren. The wreck occurred Jan. 31 on Hwy. 136 just west of Eagle Creek Farm Road in Dawsonville. According to Georgia State Patrol spokesman SFC Curtis W. Bradshaw, state troopers were called to investigate the scene of the crash around 2:30 p.m. Jan. 31. Jungle Paradise Daylilies featured in Clint Eastwood blockbuster By Jessica Taylor jtaylor@dawsonnews.com When Suzanne Franklin got a phone call in early spring 2018 from a production crew working for Clint Eastwood’s upcoming film, she didn’t know what to think. “At first I was in shock. I was like ‘how do I know you’re really from the Clint Eastwood movie production?’ You know, you get scammed,” Franklin said. The man identified himself as Luke Castleberry. He said the pro duction team wanted to purchase hundreds of Franklin’s unique daylilies to be used in Eastwood’s 2018 film “The Mule.” After a quick Google search, Franklin, who owns Jungle Paradise Daylilies in Dawsonville, realized that she was actually in talks with Eastwood’s team.
