Tourism industry breaks economic impact records

A press release from the
Dawson County Chamber of
Commerce reports that 2017
was a record-breaking year
for the economic impact of
tourism in Dawson County
and in the state of Georgia.
Numbers released during
the Tourism, Hospitality and
Arts Day Feb. 5 at the state
capitol show that direct tourist
spending in Dawson County
increased by more than $2
million from 2016 to 2017,
with a total of $52.39 million
spent in 2017.
The release states that tour
ism activity in Dawson
County including shopping at
the North Georgia Premium
Outlets, zip lining at
Amicalola Falls, picking
pumpkins at Burt’s Pumpkin
Farm and go-karting at
Atlanta Motorsports Park gen
erated $1.47 million in local
tax revenue and supported
507 jobs.
“Each Dawson County
household would need to be
taxed an additional $462 per
year to replace taxes generat
ed by tourism economic activ
ity,” the release states.
According to the U.S.
Travel Association and
Tourism Economics, the
state’s tourism industry saw a
similarly record-breaking
amount in 2017 with $63.2
billion generated, an increase
of 3.8 percent over 2016.
According to the release,
Dawson County Chamber of
Commerce President Christie
Moore and Tourism and
Events Director Dustin Heard
attended the Feb. 5 event in
Atlanta, which brings hospi
tality and arts industry profes
sionals from across the state
together to celebrate the eco
nomic impact that tourism has
on Georgia.
Moore and Heard were
among tourism leaders who
presented Gov. Brian Kemp
with a check that represented
the $3.2 billion in state and
local tax revenues generated
by tourism-related expendi
tures in 2017.
“We are proud to champion
the economic impact of tour
ism in our local community,”
Moore said. “We will contin
ue to market Dawsonville and
Dawson County as a top tour
ism destination in Georgia,
and will work to ensure that
each year is a record-breaking
year.”
The Dawson County
Chamber of Commerce and
Office of Tourism
Development market more
than 40 local accommodations,
attractions and restaurants in
Dawson County with the goal
to attract visitors to Dawson
County and increase invest
ment in the local economy.
