Crystal Falls rezoning approved
Motion passes Dawson County BOC by 3-2 vote

Despite a unanimous vote from the county
planning commission recommending denial of
rezoning Crystal Falls Lake & Golf Club, the
Dawson County Board of Commissioners voted
last week to approve the rezoning request from
Residential Sub-Rural to Residential Planned
Community.
After an unsuccessful motion to deny the
rezoning request by District 1 Commissioner
Sharon Fausett, District 2 Commissioner Chris
Gaines motioned to approve the rezoning with
several stipulations at the March 21 meeting.
The motion passed 3-2, with Fausett and
District 4 Commissioner Julie Nix opposed.
Dawson Cherokee Capital LLC made a request
to rezone 1,038.46 acres with proposed plans to
have an ultimate buildout of 1,012 homes at the
same density, just smaller lot sizes.
Phase one of the buildout would contain 367
age-targeted homes for those 55 and older with
homes on smaller lot sizes.
Though the lots would be smaller, the number
of homes would remain unchanged. Instead that
unused space will be set aside as additional
undisturbed green space.
The plans for the development denote that 53.6
percent of the property will be green space. In

EPIC events take place every third Thursday of the month

Inside the activity room at Rock Creek
Park, more than 40 exceptional adults came
together for an epic Thursday morning.
On March 21, the Dawson County
Parks and Recreation department hosted
its second EPIC (Exceptional People In
our Community) event, an arts and crafts
session at the park where adults with dis
abilities came from Dawsonville,
Dahlonega and Cumming to partake in
fun activities including slime making,

Superintendent
warns against
vaping dangers

Superintendent of Dawson County
Schools Dr. Damon Gibbs issued a letter
March 20 to the community regarding the
dangers of electronic cigarette usage
among students as the trend continues to
rise in an effort to raise
awareness of what the
youth are ingesting.
“Over the past two years
we have seen an increase
in a dangerous new trend
among students, e-ciga-
rette use, also known as
vaping which can quite
frankly put our students at
great risk,” Gibbs said.
Gibbs’ letter also addressed a recent inci
dent in which a Dawson County Junior High
School student was transported to the hospi
tal because of vaping an unknown substance.

Green as its next human
rfesources director.
