12-time letterman nears end of career
Maggie Schandera signs to play softball for Georgia Highlands College
By Bob Christian

At the end of the spring 2019 track
and field season Dawson County High
School senior Maggie Schandera will
add the final bar to the impressive 11
athletic letters already on her jacket.
The bar will mark her fourth letter in
track and field to go along with the four
she earned playing softball, three netted
on the basketball court and the one from
swimming gained in her senior year.
Schandera has set her eyes on the goal
of qualifying for the GHSA Georgia
Track and Field State Tournament in the
sports of shot-put and discus as she
looks to finish off her athletic career
with one final flourish before heading
off to earn a nursing degree and play
softball in Cartersville for the Georgia
Highland College Cougars.
“I’m excited for track season to be clos
er to the end, because I want to see if I can
make it to state, which I’m pretty sure I
will be able to do,” Schandera said. “We
have a new way of throwing. It’s called the
‘Country Boy.’ With the ‘Glide’ my
momentum stopped too easy. It’s just a lot
easier to keep your momentum going.”
The throwing style has increased
Schandera’s distance in the shot-put by
an impressive two feet and led to a
series of top-five finishes in regional
competition over the first half of the
season. She used the technique to set a
personal best record of 32 feet during

In what appeared to be the toughest
week of the year of 2019, the Lady
Tiger’s faced the two top-ranked
teams in region 7-AAA as the GACS
Spartans came to town March 26 fol
lowed by a trip up the road March 28
to face the Lumpkin County Indians.
Dawson County has faced tough
competition all season but sophomore
Molly Muenchen has found the net
seemingly at will all season to lead an
evenly distributed offense. The
defense has been led by sophomore
Amber Hoard and senior Fallan Lacey
in the net as they had combined for
five shut-outs and two ties to lead the
team on an 11 of 13 game winning
streak.
When faced with all of the statistics
Head Coach Chess Hamby knew the
challenges that were ahead of him as
he prepared his team for what would
be the toughest test this year.
“GAC has shown that they will be
the toughest competition again this
year in the region,” Hamby
said. “They are a solid team year after
year and we know that it is getting to
be a great battle.”
The battle opened with both teams
showing flashes of speed as they tried
to exploit the very rare and very nar
row scoring opportunities presented in
the first half. On one of their first
chances to score, Muenchen managed
to put her head on the ball as it sailed
in from the corner on a perfect line
from senior Rachel Rajczak and
Dawson County took a quick 1-0 lead.
With Lacey in net the score held
until late in the game when the
Spartans slipped in an equalizer and
the clock wound down on a 1-1 score
at the end of regulation.
As a regional game there could not
be a tie, and the game was settled on

Torrential spring rains returned to wash
out the first game of Dawson County’s
three-game series with region 7-AAA
rivals Lumpkin County last week.
Instead the Tigers opened the series with
a 4-1 loss on the road and played their sec
ond double-header of the season to con
clude the series on March 29.
In a pair of games that were not decided
until the final inning, Dawson County split
the double-header with the Indians as they
held on to win game one by a score of 5-1,
but then saw the Indians complete the
come back victory in game two with an
11-9 tally.
Game one started in smashing fashion as

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Molly Muenchen
Sophomore Molly Muenchen scored the game’s
opening goal as she led the Lady Tigers to a 4-1
penalty kick shoot-out victory over the GAC
Spartans March 26. She followed that up with
a thrilling performance in the 5-0 win over
regional arch-rival Lumpkin County March 28.
Muenchen leads Dawson County in scoring for
the 2019 season and is a key reason behind the
team’s 4-0 regional record.
