Bank makes $5K donation to Good Shepherd Clinic
From staff reports
Foothills Community Bank recently
donated $5,000 to Good Shepherd Clinic.
The clinic provides free medical, dental,
vision, hearing and wellness services and
prescription medications to county resi
dents who have no insurance or the finan
cial means to pay for healthcare.
The donation was given Feb. 22 on
behalf of CSB’s Community Foundation, a
charitable organization established to pro
vide much needed funds for important
community causes.
“We considered many worthwhile organiza
tions in the community and selected the Good
Shepherd Clinic,” Adam Smith, Senior Vice
President of Foothills Community Bank, said.
“Their selection was based, in large part, on
the important and life-changing services the
clinic provides to our community.”
The donation represents one of the most
significant donations by a Dawson County
business since the clinic opened in 2009.
“The donation will help the clinic assist
a growing number of patients in the
future,” board chair Jane Stuckey said.

Back for another year,
the expo hopes to answer
all the questions local gar
deners — young and old —
may have. After being a
part of the Master
Gardeners for 10 years and
seeing her fair share of gar
den expos, that’s still
Michaud’s favorite part.
“If they have a question
about something in their
yard, a plant or anything,
we have an ‘Ask a Master
Gardener’ booth,” Michaud
said. “So they can go ask
them and get some really
good feedback.”
This year the expo will
feature four speakers on dif
ferent aspects of caring for
plants in North Georgia.
At 11 a.m. Friday, one of
the expo’s vendors will
teach a session called
“Enjoying Ferns: Indoors
and Out.” Later, at 1 p.m.,

At 11 a.m. Saturday,

will give a talk about
“Attracting Beneficial
Insects for Organic
Gardening,” and at 1 p.m.,
Carin Booth with the
University of Georgia

about “Planning for and
Maximizing the Bounty of

“The fact that you can
learn about horticulture by
going to the speakers and
getting questions answered,
there is a lot of good infor

nicated to our customers,”
Michaud said.
On top of the scheduled
speakers, each vendor will
be free to answer questions
and recommend different
things for gardens and
yards.
“Our vendors bring in all
kinds of interesting plants
and they have good prices,”
Michaud said.
There will be perennials,
annuals, daylilies, ferns,
azaleas, all types of trees,
native plants and shrubs
available for purchase.
Michaud said there will
also be vegetables and
herbs at the expo.
Apart from plants, there
will be different tools, gar
den and yard art, decorative
pots and even local honey.
“Truly, the atmosphere is
so joyous and pleasant that
I think people really do
enjoy coming every year,”
Michaud said. “As long as
you love gardening, you’ll
enjoy coming.”

Chamber of Commerce President
Christie Moore said. “If you haven’t
looked at a USDA loan you are miss
ing out because there are so many phe
nomenal programs and I think that is a
big part of this today.”
Tolson agreed and said while serving
on the board for Family Connection,
the board wanted to address the need
for affordable elderly housing and dis
covered that USDA has a program that
can help, something he didn’t expect.
“When you look at the citizens and
what’s there to help them, the people
that maybe need roofing or heating and
air that couldn’t necessarily afford
that, you know, USDA is there for
them to help them with all of those
things,” City of Dawsonville HR
Manager Donna Blanton said.
Representatives from USDA were
on site to assist with questions on farm
loans, home and home repair loans and
public bodies and nonprofit assistance
as well as opportunities for business
startups, expansions, business plans
and financial projections.
“So many people don’t know what
these organizations. I didn’t know what
they do, so it’s important that we all learn
what we do so we can partner together
and work together to better different areas
whether it be housing or environmental or
water and waste, or trying to help some
body with a business plan,” USDA State
Director Joyce White said.
According to White, USDA Rural
Development is the sixth largest bank
in the nation, and that this year the cur
rent administration has allotted $215
million to spend in Georgia which will
mostly be used for low interest loans.
“We want to see that Georgia gets its
fair share and get it out in the rural
areas and bring some jobs to the rural
areas,” White said.
Based on the success of the first
expo, Moore and Blanton said they
hope to grow the event next year by
possibly tying it in with the food truck
nights and farmers market.
Though the next expo won’t be for
some time, Blanton said she hopes the
citizens know that they can always
reach out to the city or the Chamber of
Commerce where they will be put in
touch with the right person for their
business and home needs.
“What I would like for the citizens
to know is that there are people here
for them whatever their needs are and
even if it’s not the day of the event
they know that they can still call one
of us and we know who to put them
with,” Blanton said.
