Iron Mountain Park status uncertain
Meeting discussed 4,300-acre ATV park, music venue in Lumpkin and Dawson counties
By Joshua Demarest

After five hours, citizens of
Lumpkin and Dawson counties
walked out of the Lumpkin
County Administration
Building with little clarity on
the status of the Iron Mountain
Park project.
The meeting, a public hear
ing on the Special Land Use
Application (SLUA) for the
4,300-acre ATV park and music
venue in Lumpkin and Dawson
counties, closed May 7 with the
Lumpkin County Board of
Commissioners voting to table
the application until their next
regular session so that the com
missioners could gather more
information and address the
lack of specificity in the pro
posal.
‘Lack of specificity’ was a
common phrase during the
course of the night.
At the beginning of the pub
lic hearing portion of the meet
ing, Craig Stansberry, the
owner of the land and CEO of
Iron Mountain Park, gave his
presentation to the board and
the public.
Drawing comparisons to
Disney World and the outlet mall
in Dawson County, he outlined

Rescuers on Saturday recov

Wednesday’s fatal boating
incident on Lake Lanier.
The body of Nick
Schimweg, 38, of Cumming,
was recovered by Georgia
DNR game wardens just
after 6:30 p.m., according to
Mark McKinnon, a public
affairs officer for the
Georgia DNR.
Schimweg’s body was
located approximately 50 feet
from the crash site,
McKinnon said, in the Bald
Ridge Creek area of Little
Ridge Park. Rescuers discov
ered the body in 54-feet-deep
water where the bottom is
covered in standing and fall
en timber, McKinnon said.
Rescuers found Schim
weg’s body using sector
scan sonor, McKinnon said,
then retrieved it using a
remote-operated-vehicle.
The body was turned over
to the Forsyth County
Coroner, McKinnon said.
Schimweg’s recovery
completed efforts that
began Wednesday after
game wardens received
reports of a boating incident
involving a bass boat and
cruiser Wednesday, May 8,
at approximately 4:55 p.m.
Schimweg was the pas
senger on the bass boat,
which was operated by
Brianislav Prazich, 59, of
Cumming. The boat was
discovered with extensive
damage but Schimweg and
Prazich were missing.
Divers recovered Pra-
zich’s body near the inci
dent site on Thursday, May
9, at 3:30 p.m.
The other boat, a 23- to
24-foot cruiser with three
adults on board, had only
minor damage.
Scott Butler, 55, of
Atlanta who was operating
the cruiser, was taken to
North Fulton Hospital for
treatment of chest pain and
upper extremities injuries,
according to Division Chief
Jason Shivers of the Forsyth
County Fire Department.
The cruiser’s two passen
gers — Amy Butler, 19, of
Atlanta, and Abigail
Suzman, 18, of Scarsdale,
N.Y. — received only minor
injuries.
The U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, Georgia DNR Faw
Enforcement Division, Forsyth
County Sheriff’s Office,
Forsyth County Fire Depart
ment and Forsyth County
Emergency Management
Agency were involved in the
recovery effort.
The DNR Faw Enforce
ment’s Critical Incident
Reconstruction Team is
investigating the incident,
which is expected to take
6-8 weeks, according to
McKinnon.

The city of Dawsonville isn’t the only
one cracking down on vaping usage as the
school system plans to tighten the disci

session of e-cigarettes and vaping para
phernalia.
After last week’s unanimous city council
vote to implement a new ordinance limit
ing tobacco usage and vaping at city hall,
