The surprising Hallmark audience can deliver peace For the past few years, Tink has been writing and produc ing shows for the Hallmark Channel. And one thing has been an astounding awakening for us: Hallmark viewers are devoted and immensely grate ful for family programming. At church, if there’s a time of greeting, women will come over, hug his neck and say, “Thank you for one of my favorite shows.” Strangers approach us in restaurants or grocery stores and name every movie or show he’s written for Hallmark, then look him in the eye and say, “Thank you for putting some thing on TV that I can watch with my children.” One moth er told us that she and her teenage daughter watch Hallmark faithfully and that her daughter says, “That’s the kind of romance I want.” One of our house-sitters is so devoted that, when she stays while we are gone, I make sure every TV is turned to the Hallmark channel. After one nice woman left our table in a restaurant in a town where we don’t live, Tink looked at me with bewilderment and said, “I’ve been in television all my life and I’ve worked on some pretty big, successful shows. But I have never - ever - had anyone thank me like they do with my work on Hallmark. It’s remarkable.” Over Christmas, a movie that Tink had written (“A Godwink Christmas” starring Kathie Lee Gifford) was the third most watched telecast in Hallmark’s Movies and Mysteries Channel history; it was also one of the most viewed cable programs of the night. Considering there are hundreds of channels and that the movie played on Hallmark’s premium channel, which costs an additional sub scription fee, much like HBO or Showtime, it’s particularly impressive. RONDARICH Columnist 'When I tuned in to watch "A Godwink Christmas," I got caught up in all of the other movies, as well. The sets are simply stunning. And while the plots are mostly predictable, I have decided, that is what people like: In a world of uncertainty, we like the comfort of predictability and that there will always be a happy ending.' When I tuned in to watch “A Godwink Christmas,” I got caught up in all of the other movies, as well. The sets are simply stunning. And while the plots are mostly predict able, I have decided, that is what people like: In a world of uncertainty, we like the comfort of predictability and that there will always be a happy ending. A couple of years ago, Tink excitedly bounced into the room and announced he had found the perfect song for an episode of a series he was producing. A young woman was returning home from a tumultuous life in the big city. The song, which would play as she was wandering through her childhood home, was “The House That Built Me,” an enormous hit by country singer Miranda Lambert. The song, about a woman who revisits her childhood home, has the line, “And I bet you didn’t know, under that live oak, my favorite dog is buried in the yard.” Tink was playing the song but when it came to that line, the exuberance disappeared and his big smile turned to a frown. “Oh,” he said a bit glumly, “Hallmark won’t approve this song. The dog dies.” I burst out laughing. It’s happily true: dogs don’t die on Hallmark. While the devotion of the Hallmark audience is surpris ing, it is the growth of one seg ment that is stunning: men. Over the past year, numer ous wives have said, “I came in the other day and found my husband watching the Hallmark Channel. When I caught him red-handed, he admitted that he watches it when I’m not around.” “I like it,” one man said simply. “They show the good in people and, in the end, it all works out.” A close friend is a farmer. A hard-working, rough, tough man. His hands are dry and calloused from the years he has slaved, fighting against the elements, just trying to survive. He can tell us every thing that’s on Hallmark, when the new movies air, and what time to watch. It all boils down to this: People - men, women, chil dren - are tired of the hatred and ugliness of the world. We all want sweet, peaceful predictability. Maggie Schandera Growing up, from the time I was able to walk to the present, you have always been able to find me at the softball field. It’s amazing to think that my whole life has been centered on this one thing, and there isn’t any thing anyone could say to make me want to go back and change it. At the age of two, I started watch ing my sister and her best friend play softball. It was then I realized what I wanted to do as I grew up, I wanted to play softball. Not only play the game, I wanted to be a pitcher, and be the best. For years I trained and worked with my dad and played on many dif ferent teams. At the age of 11 we realized that if I wanted to be the best I could be, I needed to get with some one else for training. I started work ing with one of the best pitching coaches ever, Coach G. Training with him consisted of learning new pitches and getting stronger for my future. Throughout the years, though I put most of my time toward softball, I played other sports. I played basket ball starting around the same age I started softball, but it was never what I was focused on. I went through many weekends of going from bas ketball to softball all in the same day. I did this for a couple of years until I realized that I liked basketball but I loved softball. I didn’t quit basketball all together, I still played for my school, but I started putting all my free time into softball. Everything was finally falling into place, by my high school career of softball, I was thriving. My freshman year I got pulled up to varsity at the beginning of the season, then my sophomore year I was the Ace pitcher. My junior year I began thinking a lot about college, but I didn’t really understand how to get in contact with any coaches. My junior season in softball didn’t go as well as I wanted, I just hoped for a good basketball season after that. Little did I know playing basketball would cause the biggest set back of my life. On December 281 was playing a basketball game in Cherokee, North Carolina when I chased a ball out of bounds. I jumped to throw the ball back in but when I landed my knee bent inward, and all I could feel and hear was a ton of pops. The trainer checked it out, but all he thought was maybe a meniscus tear, boy was he wrong. Once I got home I came up to the school and had Jessica, our train er, check it out. It took her less than five minutes to realize it was my ACL, though she didn’t want to tell us. An ACL injury requires surgery and it can take up to a year to recover from surgery. After I got confirmation it was tom we got my surgery set as soon as possible. I knew I had three months until spring travel softball season started and obviously I knew I wouldn’t be back before then. I did know however I could be back in four to five months to make it to summer softball. Another thing I knew I had to do was, once I got back on my feet I had to impress colleges. After a very hard four months of physical therapy and working out with my knee I got back on the soft- ball field by the beginning of May. At my first tournament back, it was a showcase, no colleges were even looking at me, but I met a woman, Sage, who works for a company called NSR. NSR stands for National Scouting Report and Sage saw some thing in me, so we began working with her to find my fit for college. I still wasn’t pitching my best, but I was working hard to get back to my full potential. Sage helped me contact colleges, go on visits, and actually find my perfect fit. I signed to play softball for Georgia Highlands College on November 3rd. Throughout the years softball taught me lots of things like; hard work, patience, and dedication. I worked my whole life to get to where I am today. I get to fulfill my dream of playing for the next level. The quote, “To some softball is a game; to others it’s life” (Jennie Finch) has never applied to anyone as much as it has to me. I spent my whole life training for the moment of getting my college scholarship and all the hard work paid off.
