Three Dawson County residents
were arrested last Wednesday dur
ing a multi-agency sex offender
compliance investigation. The
operation represented the com
bined efforts of the Dawson
County Sheriff’s Office, the
Georgia Bureau of Investigation,
the Georgia Department of
Community Supervision, the
United States Marshals Office and
United States Immigration and
Customs Enforcement.
According to a release by the
Sheriff’s Office, “the purpose
of the detail was to ensure that
registered sex offenders and
sexual predators within
Dawson County are in compli
ance with the Official Code of
Georgia, (O.C.G.A), 42-1-12.”
While investigators with the
Dawson County Sheriff’s
Office conduct regular checks
to make sure sex offenders in
the county are in compliance
with the law, this taskforce was
designed to do a more thorough
verification.
During the bust, Jody Lee
Chadwick was arrested for proba
tion violation and failure to regis
ter as a sex offender; Christopher
Kyle Harris was arrested for a
parole violation; and Clyde Ray
Huskins was arrested for failure to
register as a sex offender.
“It is important for our com
munity to know that there are
registered offenders living in
our county,” the Sheriff’s
Office release stated. “By
working within our office, as
well as with our partner agen
cies, we continue to strive to
ensure compliance, in order to
help keep our community safe.”

How one local brewer is bringing mead to north Georgia
By Jessica Taylor
jtaylor@dawsonnews.com
Tucked away on
Industrial Park Road next
to the North Georgia
Premium Outlets, Derek
Piper is busy as a bee.
A sixth grade science
teacher at Vickery Creek
Middle School by day,
Piper spends his evenings
crafting an assortment of
meads at The BeeCraft
Mead Company.
What began as a home
brewing hobby 20 years
ago has blossomed into a
fledgling meadery hidden
in the north Georgia hills.
“It’s pretty rare to have
a meadery around,” Piper
said, filling a small glass
with mead in his tasting
room.
In fact, BeeCraft Mead
Company was the third
meadery to open in the
state of Georgia. There
are now seven meaderies
across the state.
Mead is the oldest
known alcoholic beverage
in the world and is com
monly made with honey,
water and yeast. Evidence
of fermented beehives
dates back 21,000 years
while evidence of deliber
ate mead making dates
back 9,000 years.
Throughout history,
mead was the drink of
choice for royals and
gods in Greece, Rome
and Egypt. In Irish lore, a
river of mead runs
through heaven. As for
the Vikings, it was the
only thing the Norse god
Odin drinks. Even the
term “honeymoon”
comes from the Irish, and
possibly Roman, practice
of parents gifting newly
weds with a month’s
worth of honey wine to
promote fertility.

While new laws are often scheduled to take
effect on July 1, Georgia’s controversial heart
beat abortion bill is not set to take effect until
January. It is also the subject of a lawsuit.
Below are some of the laws that took
effect Monday:
• House Bill 12: Requires public
schools to post signs displaying phone
numbers to report child abuse or neglect.
• House Bill 62: Requires providers to
warn patients receiving mammograms
