Tigers 'coming together fast'
Team much improved in second padded camp
By Bob Christian

The Dawson County Tigers travelled to
Pickens County High School on June
26-27 to participate in the second padded
camp of the summer. The two-day event
and subsequent film review session have
proved an invaluable tool, according to
defensive coach Greg Baloga, and the
growth between camps shows their impact.
“The team has got a lot better since
the first camp, especially for as young
as they are,” Baloga said. “They are
coming together fast, which is good.”
Each day consists of three segments, a walk
through, a 15-minute contact drill and finally
a full-scale scrimmage in the afternoon. With
more than a dozen teams participating the
Tigers were exposed to a wide variety of
schemes and Offensive Coordinator Andy
LeBlanc attributed some of the team’s

Future Tigers learn basketball
fundamentals at skills camp

The Dawson County
Tigers hosted a basketball
skills camp from June 24-28
for boys between the ages of
5-14 at Rock Creek Park.
In their second year in the
program, DCHS assistant
coaches Will and Carly
Anglin have seen an
improvement in the pro
gram and a slight increase
in the number of campers.
“I think we have one
more camper this year than
last year,” Will said.
“Getting help from the high
school kids has been huge.
We are able to work with
them in smaller groups.”
In addition to the Anglins,
junior varsity player AJ
Moore lent his expertise to
teaching 18 campers the
fundamentals of basketball
including ball-handling,
shooting, agility and foot
work. The camp started
with basic lessons and pro
gressed in difficulty over
the week ending in a three-
event competition day that
featured a one-on-one tour
nament, a hot-shot tourna
ment and the presentation
of the best camper trophy.
The games played during
camp are designed to build
on the skills taught early in
the week. For example, the
addition of basketballs and
dribbling to a routine game
of sharks-and-minnows
made for a fun but challeng
ing ball-handling drill.
“I’ve been helping out for
the last two days of the
camp,” Moore said. “It’s
been fun playing games
with the kids.”
The games also serve a
vital secondary role accord
ing to Will Anglin as he
talked about the differences
between this week’s camp
and the girls skills camp put
on two weeks ago.
“Girls are way easier than
boys,” he said. “You can

Pit issue costs Elliott

The checkered flag waved over No. 88 at
Chicagoland Speedway as Alex Bowman
captured his first career Monster Energy
NASCAR Series Cup (MENSC) win on
June 30 in the Campground 400 after a rain
delay of 3 hours and 18 minutes.
NASCAR deployed a wide array of dry
ing equipment to bring the 1.5-mile
D-shaped tri-oval up to standard, but the
storm had an obvious effect in a race that
saw heavy tire wear early, and heavy con
tact late that led to an exciting 267 laps in
Joliet, Illinois.

Sophia D’Oliveira
Rising senior Sophia D’Oliveira led
Dawson County in both steals and assists
during the team’s deep run in the 2018
GHSA State Playoffs that ended with an
Elite Eight appearance. In addition to her
ball handling skills, D’Oliveira attacks the
net with a ferocity that overwhelms her
opponents and will consistently create
scoring opportunities for the Lady Tigers
throughout the 2019 season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mason Barnes
Dawson County High School junior
Mason Barnes put his skill set on full-
display in the final game of the GHSA/
NCAA basketball camp on June 23.
Barnes proved to be a scoring threat
from every angle of the court and
routinely challenged the St. Francis
defense with his speed and toughness in
the lane. Defensively, he created several
opportunities for the Tigers by disrupting
passing lanes and forcing turnovers in an
impressive 2019 debut.
