Satterfield recognized for academic achievement
From staff reports
ACCG, Georgia’s County
Association, recently awarded
Dawson County District 3
Commissioner Tim Satterfield
with a certificate for successfully
completing the core requirements
in the Lifelong Learning
Academy.
For more than two decades
ACCG and the Carl Vinson
Institute of Government at the
University of Georgia, have col
laborated to offer supplemental
training and educational tools in
the Lifelong Learning Academy.
With abundant courses to choose
from, every county official has a
tailor-made learning experience
that allows them to excel in specif
ic areas of expertise.
“Counties in Georgia face a
constantly evolving set of chal
lenges which elected and appoint
ed officials must address in order
to lead effectively,” stated Dave
Wills, ACCG’s Executive
Director. “The Lifelong Learning
Academy was created to help
county officials expand their skill-
set, equipping them to address the
challenges they face and to take
advantage of opportunities to
improve their respective commu
nities. I commend leaders such as
Commissioner Satterfield, who
understand the value of continuing
their education, taking the initia
tive to engage in the Lifelong
Learning Academy,
which is truly a program
of excellence.”
The Lifelong Learning
Academy was created
with input from county
commissioners who iden
tified courses based on the
issues and decision-mak
ing challenges regularly
faced by county officials. To
ensure the course requirements
and curriculum remain relevant
and engaging, the ACCG Lifelong
Learning Committee — com
prised of county commissioners
and staff from both ACCG and the
Carl Vinson Institute of
Government at the University of
Georgia — meet regularly to
review and adjust accord
ingly. Through this collab
orative approach, the
Lifelong Learning
Academy has been suc
cessful in equipping coun
ty officials with the neces
sary skills to meet the
needs of their constituents.
“I have been in city and
county government for 43 years.
When I was elected in November
2018, I wanted to better under
stand my role as a Commissioner,
in regards to policies and proce
dures, as quickly as possible so I
could better serve the citizens of
Dawson County,” Satterfield said.
“By completing the Lifelong
Learning Academy in six months,
I not only learned a great deal, but
I also had the opportunity to net
work with other county officials.”
ACCG is Georgia’s county
association and works on behalf of
county officials and their commu
nities by providing public policy
and legislative advocacy, leader
ship development, civic and com
munity engagement initiatives,
insurance and retirement programs
that specialize in local government
needs and other cost-saving pro
grams. Formed in 1914 when
county officials came together to
help fund the state’s first highway
department, ACCG today serves
as a catalyst for advancing
Georgia’s counties. For more
information, go to www.accg.org.
