Nick Cain, training manager at
Friend’s American Grill, was pre
pared for a big crowd July 7 for the
final of the 2019 Women’s World
Cup tournament featuring the
United States versus Netherlands.
“We’ve been getting calls about it
all week,” Cain said. “I have defi
nitely scheduled the staff for a lot
of people.”
With his doors opening at 11
a.m., the exact same time as kick
off, Cain was quickly proven right
as a small crowd immediately set
tled in front of the big screen TV
featuring the game.
A pair of young soccer players
made sure to get the best seats in
the house as Maddie Wiley and
Katie Storr, both playing their first
year of the sport, guided their fami
lies into the center booth.
“I think it’s good, it’s very exciting
to watch them,” Wiley said. “Since
we’ve gotten more into soccer.”
Storr quickly agreed with her
friend but she also hoped to be able
pick up a few tricks to use on the
field.
“We’ve been playing a lot of soc
cer lately,” Storr said. “I want to
watch and learn. See how they set
things up.”

ties for learning as set plays domi

Summer swim season ends for
Racers with pair of tournaments

The Dawsonville
Racers closed out the
2019 summer swimming
season with back-to-back
tournament weekends as
the team took part in the
Georgia Recreation and
Parks Association
(GRPA) District 7 cham
pionship June 29 in
Gainesville and then the
North Georgia Swim
League (NGSL) champi
onship on July 5-6 in
Clarkesville.
The District 7 tourna
ment is an all-day affair
extending across 90
events with well over 100
swimmers ranging in age
from 7-18. Dawson
County faced off against
teams from Jefferson,
Oconee and Habersham
counties as each team
was rewarded points
based on each individual
swimmer’s performance.
“Obviously, you are
swimming as an individu
al,” Assistant Coach M.C.
Thompson said. “But you
score as a team and we
always have some real
strong swimmers.”
One of the swimmers to
emerge from the tourna
ment was eight-year old
Cash Kirby who raced in
three events on the day,
the 25-foot freestyle,
25-ft butterfly and the
100-yard individual med
ley. With his lowest finish
being a fourth-place berth
in the freestyle, Kirby not
only brought home team
points in every event he
qualified for state in both
the medley and the butter
fly with a first and second
place finish respectively.
“Its nerve wracking and
exciting,” Kirby said. “I
don’t know how I’m
going to do there.”

Haley escapes
‘Big One’ to
win at Daytona

Mother Nature’s fireworks stole the show
not once, but twice at the Daytona
International Speedway over the Fourth of
July weekend handing Justin Haley his first
Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series vic
tory in only his third Cup Series start at the
Coke Zero Sugar 400 under a rain-soaked
red flag on lap 127 of a scheduled 160.
And that was not the most incredible thing
that happened July 7.
In a race that featured all the intricacies
of teamwork NASCAR has to offer, from
manufacturer to owner to driver it was an
18-car accident, the dreaded “Big One,”
that started an incredible chain of events
that ended with Haley in the winner’s cir
cle.
After weather delayed the race by almost
24-hours, thunderstorms remained in the
Daytona area all of Sunday afternoon and
the always present threat of another weath
er stoppage loomed large as the race got
closer to the finish line.
With that in mind, Austin Dillon and
Clint Bowyer fought aggressively over first
place as they pack closed in behind them
out of turn one. The resultant contact
caused both drivers to spin-out directly into
