The sunflower patch will be
closed after July 14 for the
summer season to prepare for
the corn maze which opens
Sept. 14.
Hughes has big plans for the
fall festivities this year. As in
the past, there will be two
com mazes; however the main
maze is about one acre larger
than it was at its previous
location off Hwy. 53. The
design will be revealed by the
Dawson County Chamber of
Commerce within the next
few weeks.
The iconic red barn, which
was once the ticket booth, is
also being transformed. It will
now be the official gift shop,
selling Uncle Shuck’s apparel,
local crafts and fall decor.
There will also be a gem mine
and a new goat tower as well
as the festivities they’ve come
to enjoy of the years including
a pumpkin patch, the corn
cannon, jumping pad, food
and fall decorations for pur
chase.
Uncle Shuck’s is at 125
Bannister Road in
Dawsonville.

applications for the firefighter/paramed
ic positions, while during the same
timespan losing 12 employees to other
counties or hospitals.
Of those few applications, the depart
ment was able to hire two employees.
Two more were offered a job, but turned
it down.
“Hopefully (this pay increase) will
enable us to be able to retain the person
nel that we have, and to be able to, in
the long term, begin to recruit person
nel,” said Thompson. “It was good to
see the Board of Commissioners sup
porting the public safety and the fire
department. We’ve always had a good,
strong working relationship with this
Board,” he added.
“We were very pleased with the
amount of support that we received from
the citizens of Dawson County,”
Thompson emphasized. “It means a lot.
The men and women come to work
every day and sometimes they’re not
always told they’re doing a good job.
But after my presentation (at the previ
ous BOC working session) leading up to
the vote, we had a lot of community
support, and that really keeps the men
and women wanting to come to work
every day.”
