Hike Inn receives
LEED certification
From staff reports
The Len Foote Hike Inn, a backcountry
lodge deep in the Chattahoochee National
Forest, recently achieved a major sustain
ability milestone, LEED certification at the
Platinum level from the U.S. Green
Building Council (USGBC). The recertifi
cation was upgraded from a LEED Gold
certification presented in 2004.
“This new certification demonstrates the
Hike Inn’s commitment to sustainability,
said David Freeman PE, LEED AP, current
Hike Inn Board Member and formerly
Chief Engineer for the Georgia DNR and
Hike Inn Project Manager and Executive
Director of the USGBC Georgia Chapter.
“We have added significantly to the envi
ronmentally sustainable systems of the
Hike Inn over the years,” said the organiza
tion’s Executive Director, Eric Graves. “We
have upgraded and augmented our solar
systems, operational efficiency and sustain
ability practices, so it was a good time to
apply for recertification.”

After years in the works, Lloyd
Crane finally saw his name on the ath
letic center at Veterans Memorial
Park.
On July 24, Crane and his family,
friends and colleagues came together
to rededicate the athletic center and
gymnasium at the park in honor of
Crane. The facility is now The Lloyd
Crane Center.
“Several years ago I was told they
were going to name it after me and
another vehicle."
The male suspect in the second car,
Jeremy Wade Gibson of Dawsonville,
exited his vehicle and fired several
shots into the victim's car, striking and
killing her.
Johnson confirmed that the suspect
and victim were husband and wife.
Both were confirmed to be 44 years
old.
Johnson also confirmed that after
the man shot the woman, he turned
himself in and surrendered peacefully

Crane said, wiping tears from his
eyes. “It hit me. It hit me what that
means to me.”
Crane was a long time employee of
Dawson County, having served as the
Director of the Parks and Recreation
department and within the Emergency
Services department.
“You didn’t just do one job if you
worked at Dawson County, you did at
least two, sometimes three,” Dawson
County Commission Chairman Billy
Thurmond said. “I can remember
to the unarmed firefighters at the sta
tion.
According to Dawson County Fire
and Emergency Services Chief Danny
Thompson, one of the firefighters had
family members present at the time of
the incident.
"One of our personnel did observe
the shooting," Thompson told the
press. "The incident evolved so quick

operator as well.”
Thurmond spoke at last week’s
rededication ceremony about working
with Crane. From 1975 to 1993,
Thurmond worked with Crane in both
the parks department and emergency
services back in the days when there
weren’t 40 hour work weeks. They
worked “until the job got done.”
“Whatever had to be done in this
place, he was willing to do,”
