Elementary schools begin at 8:10 a.m. Aug. 2, with Dawson County Middle School starting at 7:45 a.m. and the junior high and high school starting at 7:40 a.m. The school day ends for the elementary schools at 3:05 p.m., for the middle school at 2:45 p.m. and at 2:30 p.m. for the junior high and high school. Drivers should be prepared for heavier traffic during these times. Off duty officers with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office will be out con ducting traffic to help keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible. The panels are part of an initiative Len Foote Hike Inn has dubbed "Above the Grid," which helps produce much of the inn's power. Hike Inn receives LEED certification From staff reports The Len Foote Hike Inn, a backcountry lodge deep in the Chattahoochee National Forest, recently achieved a major sustain ability milestone, LEED certification at the Platinum level from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The recertifi cation was upgraded from a LEED Gold certification presented in 2004. “This new certification demonstrates the Hike Inn’s commitment to sustainability, said David Freeman PE, LEED AP, current Hike Inn Board Member and formerly Chief Engineer for the Georgia DNR and Hike Inn Project Manager and Executive Director of the USGBC Georgia Chapter. “We have added significantly to the envi ronmentally sustainable systems of the Hike Inn over the years,” said the organiza tion’s Executive Director, Eric Graves. “We have upgraded and augmented our solar systems, operational efficiency and sustain ability practices, so it was a good time to apply for recertification.” Hike Inn staff and board members See LEED 110A By Joshua Demarest jdemarest@dawsonnews.com At approximately 7:37 p.m. Monday, July 29, 911 operators received a "frantic" call from a woman, later identified as Amy Alexandria Gibson of Dawsonville, asking for help, according to Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson. "Shortly thereafter," Johnson explained, "she pulled into the parking lot of Dawson County Fire Station 7 followed by By Jessica Taylor jtaylor@dawsonnews.com After years in the works, Lloyd Crane finally saw his name on the ath letic center at Veterans Memorial Park. On July 24, Crane and his family, friends and colleagues came together to rededicate the athletic center and gymnasium at the park in honor of Crane. The facility is now The Lloyd Crane Center. “Several years ago I was told they were going to name it after me and another vehicle." The male suspect in the second car, Jeremy Wade Gibson of Dawsonville, exited his vehicle and fired several shots into the victim's car, striking and killing her. Johnson confirmed that the suspect and victim were husband and wife. Both were confirmed to be 44 years old.
