Dawson schools to implement safety tipline By Jessica Taylor jtaylor@dawsonnews.com Four years after Joe Dumphy’s untimely passing, his spirit lives on in a charity golf tour nament that provides scholarship opportunities for local students. On June 27, 2015, Joe Dumphy, a rising sopho more at North Forsyth High School, was injured in a car crash outside Chestatee Golf Club on Ga. 400. After a month in the hospi tal trying to recovery from his injuries, the 15-year-old and promising golf stand out died on July 26, 2015, donating five vital organs to save others. Dumphy’s parents, Charley and Deb Dumphy, along with his sister Olivia, started the Joe Dumphy Memorial Golf Scholarship (JDMGS), a 501(c)(3) charity that rec ognizes local college- bound high school seniors who emulate Dumphy’s character, citizenship, faith-based attitude and sense of giving. The fifth annual Joe Dumphy Memorial Golf Tournament is set for Sept. 7 at Chestatee Golf Club at 777 Dogwood Way in Dawsonville. The $125 tournament fee includes greens and cart fee, breakfast, lunch and a dessert bar. A 50/50 raffle will also take place during the lun cheon. There will be con tests for men and wom en’s longest drives and closest to the pun prizes on all par 3 holes. A spe cial hole in one prize on 17 (where Dumphy had a hole in one) will be a one-year car lease donat ed by Atlanta Classic Cadillac/Subaru. In its four years of exis tence, the foundation has provided more than $15,000 in local scholar ships between 2016 and 2017. In 2018, in what would have been Dumphy’s senior year, the memorial fund surpassed its record by providing $17,000 to local athletes. At minimum, the scholarship board will award a $5,000 college scholarship to one local college bound high school senior in Dawson or Forsyth County and additional scholarships to other deserving high school seniors in any county in Georgia. From staff reports Dawson County Schools and Gaggle announced a partnership to keep students and schools safe by provid ing a simply way for stu dents to report threats of vio lence, bullying, weapons brought to school, peers in crisis and other urgent situa tions. The event will take place on Bill Elliott Street and Tucker Avenue, behind the Purple Corn Boutique and across Shoal non-life threatening items to designated school or district staff. They will also call school officials in emergen cy situations and can even contact law enforcement.
