4A I DAWSON COUNTY NEWS I dawsonnews.com Wednesday, January 15,2020 Amicalola Regional Farmers Market eyes April launch Local market will kick off inaugural season in new location By Joshua Demarest jdemarest@dawsonnews.com The Amicalola Regional Farmers Market held a meeting of interested ven- dors Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Dawsonville City Hall. The informal meeting was aimed at ascertaining how many vendors would be interested in being a part of the market’s first season at the new location near Main Street Park and City Hall. Farmers and artisans from Dawson County and several tangential counties met on the dreary Saturday morning. Many of the farmers had played a part in the market every year since it started, but there were an equal number of farm ers who were there for the first time. This is great news for the market, which hopes to offer an even wider selection of produce and goods than years past. Some farmers also raised questions about produce that is expected at farm ers markets but won’t be in season in Dawson County until later in the sum mer — according to one farmer present, people just expect sweet corn and water melon for Memorial Day. It was agreed at the meeting that some fresh produce will be brought up the night before each market from south Georgia until that crop is in season here. Another vendor also announced he would be bringing fresh seafood from the coast, as well as taking orders for the next week at the markets. While no date was officially decided at the meeting, organizers announced that they wanted to target a start date in April, and most vendors seemed to agree that they would be ready then. Dawson County News will continue to cover the market as it moves towards opening. Dawson County E911 fielded calls reporting a house fire at a single-wide mobile home off of War Hill Park Rd. just before noon. Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services personnel responded and immediately began defensive operations to control the blaze. Forsyth County and Lumpkin County both responded with mutual aid, with Forsyth lending a fire engine, rescue and battalion chief, and Lumpkin sending a med unit. Within 20 minutes of arrival, the crews had the fire under control. One male victim was life flighted from War Hill Park with burn injuries. His status has not been confirmed as of the writing of this article. The second fire was called in just after 1:30 p.m. at a two-story single family house off of Caboose Lane. Crews arrived quickly and made an interior approach to the fire, which appeared to be coming from the attic. The fire personnel were able to bring the fire under control quickly, and no injuries were reported. The causes of both fires are still under investigation, but according to a press release issued by Dawson County Fire and Emergency Services, neither appear to be suspicious in nature. “This is a good time to remind our community to be mindful and keep items at least 3 feet away from any heat source. At the first sign of fire, to always call 911 and get the fire department in route as soon as possi ble,” read the press release.
