THE BOWEN ART CENTER ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
Osgood Showcases his life through photography
By Zoe Hester
DCN Intern
Local photographer Brian
Osgood will showcase his pho
tography at the Bowen Art
Center Friday, March 6 until the
21.
“I’ve been a photographer
since I was about 6 years old...
This is showing the best of my
60 years of life. I tried to pick
60 images for my 60 years out
of my 100,000 plus images I
have,” Osgood said at the gal
lery on Friday.
Osgood’s passion for photog
raphy started as a child when he
wanted to save vacation memo
ries by taking pictures, as he
saw his father and grandfather
do. This interest in preserving
the past spiraled into what
would become his career and as
the young photographer grew,
so too did his skills.
As Osgood grew, so did his
skills and experience.
“I decided to go to school at
the Art Institute of Atlanta,”
Osgood said. “While I was there
I met a guy, Bob English, who
was opening a slide processing
lab in Atlanta, there wasn’t one
at the time. He opened that in
1979 and a friend of mine was
working there who wanted to go
home for Christmas. He told
Bob I would cover for him for
the month of December. Then I
was there for 24 years.”
Throughout his years of pho
tography, Osgood adapted to
changes of cameras and equip
ment, and experimented with
many different photography
styles. His exhibit at the Bowen
showcases many of these styles
and among the displays there’s
something for everyone.
In one direction there will be
slides of architecture across the
world, in another, concert shots
of bands from the 70’s and 80’s,
and another holds an artistic
take on forks.
But something that can be
seen throughout his work is his
interesting use of light and
motion.
“I do a lot of manipulating in
the darkroom and in the camer
as, I did a lot of film use back in
the day and of course digital
now. I also do a lot of blurred

stuff with moving the camera,”
Osgood said.
Osgood is not a stranger to the
Bowen and this is not his first
show at the Dawsonville art hub.
“I do things like project old
slides on the wall and put differ
ent things in front of them, I
showed most of those here
about 10 years ago. I did two
shows here, this one and that
one. This is kinda like my last
hurrah, I don’t know if I’ll ever
do this again, maybe if I turn
80,” Osgood said.
When viewed as a whole,
Osgood’s collection of photos is
not only a showcase of his talent
and artistic vision, but an end
less journey of moments from
his life, frozen in time.
“Remembering where you
shot them makes them pretty
special,” Osgood said.

Dawson County man, Tyler Tolin, a former
Marine and Army Airborne Ranger, recently
announced his run for Georgia’s 9th
District in the U.S. Congress.
“I believe as a country we are
headed for troubling times. For too
long, Washington DC has been
plagued with corruption and politics.
Politicians have used and abused the
system at every level from the local
community, to the State and Federal
government,” Tolin announced on
Feb. 19 via his campaign website.
“Politicians have done nothing but enrich
themselves, set rules for us to live by, but not
themselves.”
According to his announcement, Tolin
enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in
1998. After seven years and three units, he
earned his way to the Marine Corps Anti-
Terrorism unit Fast Company before decid
ing to switch to the Army and served as an
Army Airborne Ranger for tours in Iraq and
Afghanistan.
Tolin’s campaign platform includes focus
on strict constitutionalism, pro-life policies,
anti-red flag laws, lowering taxes, cutting
down on student loan debt, reforming wel
fare and immigration and combatting human
trafficking.
“I swear my oath again to the great
American patriots of Georgia’s 9th
District, to fight for their rights,
defend the 2nd Amendment, cut
taxes, support pro-life, cut foreign
aid, build the wall and bring God
back to the forefront of American
life,” Tolin stated.
Georgia’s 9th Congressional dis
trict includes all of Banks, Dawson,
Elbert, Fannin, Franklin, Gilmer,
Habersham, Hall, Hart, Jackson,
Lumpkin, Madison, Rabun, Stephens,
Towns, Union and White counties and parts
of Clarke, Forsyth and Pickens counties.
Tolin joins a number of candidates who
have announced intentions to run for
Georgia’s 9th district seat that has been held
by Rep. Doug Collins since 2013.
Later this year Colins will go on to chal
lenge U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, who was
appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp in 2019
when former U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson
decided to retire after 14 years spent in the
U.S. Senate.
