Lady Tigers
The Lady Tigers came home victori
ous on Feb. 28 after a thrilling match
up against the Calhoun High School
Jackets. After 14 penalty kicks, the
Lady Tigers triumphed with a final
score of 8-7.
Going into overtime, the score was
tied at 1-1. Dawson County freshman
Daisy Vargas-Sanchez had scored her
first career goal for the Lady Tigers
during in the first half of play .
“I’m just really proud of the girls for
sticking through it,"’ Head coach
Hamby said. “They were exhausted
after regulation and then they had to
go through two overtime periods.
Then, the nerves of penalty kicks.”
The entire Lady Tiger starting lineup
got a chance to kick penalties, with
three players getting to kick twice.
Junior Molly Muenchen and twin sis
ters Maggie and Piper Wright all put
both of their penalty kicks in the back
of the net. Piper Wright ended the
game on her last attempt after a huge
save by junior goalie Addison Hoard
gave the Lady Tigers the advantage
and opportunity to end the game.
After Piper Wright threw her hands
into the air, she ran to her teammates,
who were chanting and waiting to cel
ebrate with her.
This comes after the Lady Tigers
secured their first win of the season
against the Pickens High School
Dragons, beating the Dragons 5-0.
Muenchen had her first hat trick of
the season, scoring three goals and
junior Annie Gloeckner made the other
two goals for the Lady Tigers.
“We’ve got a little bit of momentum
built up,” Hamby said. “They’re play
ing well together and communicating
even better together.”
The two victories this week have the
Lady Tigers with a record of 2-4-1
going into region play. Coach Hamby
said he thinks that his team is doing
what they need to do and hopes that
the results continue to come in their
favor.
“I think we’ve used these non-region
games the way we needed to use
them,” Hamby said. “We developed
some depth and we needed to get in
better in-game shape. Hopefully we’ll
be able to carry that into region play
and play at a high level.”
Region play began on Tuesday,
March 3, when the Lady Tigers battled
the Cherokee Bluff Bears at home.
Results were unavailable as of press
time Tuesday.
Tigers
The Tigers fell short of achieving
their first victory of the season against
the Calhoun High School Jackets, los
ing in overtime 6-5.
The Tigers went into halftime with a
lead of 5-3, but were unable to repeat
any of their offensive production for
the rest of the game.
Senior Michael Velazquez scored
two of the first half’s goals, one of
them a laser that left the Jacket’s goal
ie frozen as the ball flew past him.
Velazquez also had the assist of two
more of the Tigers goals later in the
match.
Freshman Santiago Galeano, sopho
more Jose Sandoval and junior Erick
Sanchez made up the rest of the
Tiger’s first half goals.
