Visionary. Servant-
leader. Pillar of the
Dawson County commu
nity — These are just a
few of the most common
phrases used to describe
Roger Slaton, who died at
the age of 80 on Sunday,
June 6, 2021.
But for those who
worked with and loved
Slaton for decades, what
will always be remem
bered is the selflessness
and unwavering support
for the people of Dawson
County that Slaton
embodied every day of
his life.
Slaton, a lifelong
Dawson County resident
and leader, who was at
one point or another,
involved in nearly every
facet of life in the local
community, leaves behind
an unmatched legacy of
service and community
involvement, according to
friends, family and col
leagues.
“Roger really was
everything we all aspire
to be,” Dawson County
Chamber of Commerce
President Mandy Power
said. “He was born and
raised right here in
Dawson County ... he
raised his family here, he
had a small business here,
he served in an elected
position for the school
board ... I think that’s
what we all look up to.”

Flavors of N. Ga.
event cancelled
By Erica Schmidt

Despite a great deal of community interest, the
Dawson County News’ “Flavors of North Georgia”
event has been cancelled due to local restaurants
being short-staffed and unable to participate.
The event, which was set to be on June 12 at
Veterans Memorial Park, was aimed at offering an
overview of the different cuisines and flavors that the
area has to offer through providing a place for local
restaurants to sell their food from vendor tables or
food trucks. Unfortunately, because so many local
restaurants are currently suffering from a lack of
employees, not enough restaurant owners were able
to both operate a booth at the event and keep their res
taurant running as usual at the same time.
While the event has been cancelled for now, it will
be rescheduled in the future when restaurants once
again have enough staff to be able to participate.
When the event has officially been rescheduled,
announcements and updates will be posted on the
Dawson County News website and social media
pages.
Firefighters get dunked for charity at open house event
By Erica Schmidt

On Saturday, June 5,
the Dawson County Fire
Department held an open
house and “dunk a fire
chief” event at Fire
Station 2, giving commu
nity members an opportu
nity to see the fire station,
have a free hotdogs and
snow cones, play some
corn hole, and try their
hands at dunking their
favorite Dawson County
fire chief.
Several of Dawson
County’s finest took turns
in the dunk tank, starting
off with Fire Chief and
EMA Director Danny
Thompson and rotating
throughout the day before
finishing with Dawson
County District 2
Commissioner Chris
Gaines.
Balls to throw at the
dunk tank were about $1
each and all the money
raised went towards the
county’s fire safety pro
grams. According to
Thompson, the event
raised about $500.
“We collected right at
about $500,” Thompson
said. “And I think overall
the event was successful.”
In addition to the dunk
tank fundraiser, firefight
ers were on site to answer
questions about grilling
safety and upkeep of
household smoke alarms.
According to
Thompson, the turnout
was a little bit lower than
hoped, but still had a
good number of commu
nity members.
“We would have obvi
ously loved to see a little
greater attendance and
everything, but we realize
that we probably caught
people during the middle
of vacation season cause
as soon as school gets out
people take off,”
Thompson said. “But we
were very happy to just
really engage with our
community and have an
opportunity to see them
