Murder charges filed in Applebee's fight
20-year-old Dawson man arrested for allegedly killing 19-year-old Lumpkin man

A 20-year-old Dawson
County man is now charged
with murder after a fight at a
Dawson County Applebee’s that
fatally injured a Lumpkin
County man.
Dawson County Sheriff’s
Office investigators charged
Daniel Lee Roberts with two
counts of felony murder
on Friday, for allegedly
causing the death of
Kaleb Duckworth, 19, of
Dahlonega on Tuesday,
July 27.
Roberts, who already
faces charges of aggra
vated assault and aggra
vated battery, has been
accused of attacking Duckworth
outside of the Applebee’s restau

rant on Ga. 400 in
Dawson County on
Sunday night.
Warrants allege that
Roberts struck
Duckworth in the face,
causing fatal injuries to
Duckworth’s brain when
the man fell and hit his
head on the ground.
Deputies were called to the
restaurant at about 9:53 p.m. on
July 25, after receiving reports
that someone had been knocked
out during a fight. Duckworth
was taken from the scene to a
local hospital with severe brain
trauma, where he died on
Tuesday night.
Speaking to the Dawson
County News on Friday,
Dawson County Sheriff Jeff
Johnson said detectives are still
investigating, but have deter
mined that Roberts and
Duckworth knew each other
prior to the incident and that the
fight may have involved an
argument on social media.
They are still investigating
whether any other suspects were
involved in the fight, Johnson
said.
Roberts is being held in the
Dawson County Detention
Center without bond.

Second annual charity ride brings faith, hope to those in need

The Pathfinders Family, a
Christian-based non-profit in
Cumming, hosted their second
annual ‘Ride to Recovery’ event
at the Dawson County Farmers
Market Pavillion on Sunday,
Aug. 1.
The event featured over 100
motorcyclists from the North
Georgia area riding to Dawson
County to celebrate people who
had overcome or going through
rehabilitation for alcohol or drug
addictions, raising $7,000 for
the effort.
“We’re all just a bunch of ex
knuckleheads who got our life
straight trying to give back to
the communities we sort of stole
from,” Pathfinders organizer Joe
Mele said.

Giving, loving, goofy, smart, adventurous:
These are just a few of the words that friends
and family members used to describe Kaleb
Duckworth, the 19-year-old
who tragically died last
week from injuries received
in a fight at the Applebee’s
restaurant in Dawson
County.
According to Kaleb
Duckworth’s mother,
Amanda Duckworth, her
son was the “All-
American” teenager, who loved fishing, the
outdoors and his truck, and who touched the
lives of every person he came in contact
with.
“He was just full of life — he loved fish
ing, racing, he was all about his truck and his
friends and his family,” Amanda Duckworth
said. “He was just a little country boy with a

Road to close
for roundabout

Lumpkin Campground Road in Dawson
County will be closed to through traffic for
nearly two months starting next week,
county officials announced on Thursday.
According to Laura Fulcher, public
affairs officer for the Dawson County
Government, the road will be closed at the
intersection of Harry Sosebee and Lee
Castleberry roads starting on Aug. 10,
2021, so that crews can begin the process
of constructing a roundabout at the inter
section.
The closure is expected to last until
Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, and during that
time Lumpkin Campground Road south
from the intersection of Red Rider Road
and Whitmire Drive and north from the
