At the Oct. 5 meeting of the Dawson
County Board of Education,
Superintendent Damon Gibbs updated the
board members on the latest COVID-19
case numbers in the district and the contin
ued precautions school staff and students
are taking.
Gibbs said that the reported positive
cases are much lower than they have been
since the start of the school year, which
began with 90 reported cases when the sys
tem started recording the numbers on Aug.
20.
“Our COVID positive cases that are
reported to us are about at an all-time low
for the school year,” Gibbs said. “We have
five students and one staff member current
ly, and those numbers have trended in our
favor very quickly.”

When Austin Todd Stryker’s trial starts
on Nov. 1 for his alleged role in Hannah
Bender’s murder, his lawyers will still
have to argue against the state connecting
his motive to gang-related activity.
Defendant Jerry Nesbit Harper will still
be tried in tandem with Stryker after
Northeastern Superior Court Judge
Kathlene Gosselin denied a motion to
sever.
During a pre-trial hearing on Oct. 8,
motions to continue or reschedule the trial,
suppress cell phone evidence and quash
Stryker’s felony murder and weapons
counts were also denied.
On July 27, Stryker, 24, of Dawson
County, and Harper, 79, of Forsyth County,
were reindicted for their alleged involve
ment in the shooting and stabbing death of
Bender, 21, a Lumpkin County resident.
