Dawson County News October 20, 2021 Betty Slaton Waldrop Betty Slaton Waldrop, 90, of Gainesville passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a period of declining health. Betty was born in Dawson County on August 18, 1931, to James Milton and Minnie Martin Slaton. She graduated from Dawson County High School and entered a work-training program at Downey Hospital in Gainesville. She continued to work in the medical field until her 1983 retirement from the office of local surgeons. She was of the Baptist faith, and a member of the New Holland Baptist Church. Betty was preceded in death by her FROM 1A Teacher Photos courtesy of Carson Johnson Dawson County Schools administrators present ed Johnson with herTeacher of the Year award on Oct. 6. hard work pay off when she’s seen her students succeed through the rest of their classes and move on into their careers. “The main reason that I’m still teaching is see ing the progress that stu dents in special educa tion can make given the right instruction and intervention and how it changes lives,” Johnson said. “I’ve just been in it for enough time to see my past third graders go on to careers and be suc cessful, so that’s just beautiful to me to see that and see them be suc cessful. That’s very rewarding.” Surprised to have been chosen as the school sys tem’s teacher of the year, Johnson added she is excited and honored to show how important spe cial education is. “We specifically came to Dawson County from Forsyth County; I specif ically came to bring my daughter for the educa tion,” Johnson said. “I want people to know that their children are receiv ing that superior educa tion in Dawson County; it’s not about economic income or that sort of thing. It really is about just how excellent the teachers, the administra tion, the staff and the whole education system in Dawson County is and how it provides for the kids.” In the end, Johnson said that the honor will only spur her on more to continue giving her stu dents the best education she can provide to them. “I’m gonna teach every child like I want my child to be taught,” Johnson said. “Going home to those learning differences every night and saying ‘what do I want for my daughter tomorrow’ is what I try to give to the students in my classroom.” Johnson is a special education teacher at Riverview Elementary School and says that she's part of a great team of teachers there. FROM 1A Roberts indictment alleges Roberts punched the younger teen with a closed fist, causing serious brain damage. After the fight, Duckworth was taken to a hospital with severe brain trauma and died two days later. Roberts’ arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 17. A trial date has not yet been set. Fuller, Charlotte Wood, and Betty Conner; nephews, Jerry, Ronny, Ricky, Johnny, and Mark Conner; special great niece and caregiver, Melissa H. Sheriff; great nieces and nephews and friends also survive. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 30, at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Rev.
