Wednesday, December 1,2021 dawsonnews.com I DAWSON COUNTY NEWS I 5A 30th Annual Buck Jones Toy Run Jacob Smith jsmith@dawsonnews.com During the 30th annual Buck Jones Toy Run on Sunday, Nov. 21, K.A.R.E. for Kids col lected a truckload full of toys and 170 gift cards to provide a Christmas for North Georgia families in need. The ride begins at the Cumming Fairgrounds, stops in Dawsonville at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, then fin ishes up in Fumpkin County. Each participant brings three toys, one for each county. The toys are then given to local agencies and distributed to families who need help with Christmas. K.A.R.E. for Kids president Rhonda Evans said 279 motorcycles and 58 jeeps stopped in Dawsonville to drop their gifts off and be fed a lunch of soup, beans, corn- bread and sliders, provided by Crave. "Over half the bikes had two riders, so we fed over 500 people," Evans said. A new element added to the event this year was a flag rais ing ceremony by newly formed BSA Troop 78. Photo courtesy Kelly Whitmire K.A.R.E. for Kids collected a truckload full of toys and 170 gift cards to provide a Christmas for North Georgia families in need Annual "Feed the Hungry" event set for Christmas Day By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com The seventh annual Dawson Feed the Hungry event will take place on Christmas Day this year, and in the time lead ing up to Dec. 25 event orga nizers are asking for volunteers and donations to help it run smoothly. Each year, Feed the Hungry provides a hot meal to those in need of one on Christmas Day. Volunteers help to prepare and serve the food, and meals are available to pick up or to deliv er. This year’s event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 25 at the Dawsonville Pool Room. According to event updates by organizer Scotty Seay, cur rently he is still in need of vol unteers to help serve and to help deliver the meals, as well as donations of food or mone tary support. “Still needing donations and volunteers for this event,” Seay said in his update. “We are behind in volunteers and dona tions; every little bit helps folks so call, text or email me if you would like to donate or be vol unteers.” According to the event post er, this year’s menu includes grilled boneless chicken breast, barbecue pulled pork, green beans, com, mac and cheese, rolls, mashed potatoes, assorted desserts, and bottled water and canned soda. Donations of any of the menu items listed are wel comed and appreciated. According to Seay, the most- needed donations for now are green beans and com, cooked ahead and dropped off on the day of the event, full-size metal catering pans, three-compart ment to-go boxes, desserts and drinks. “We will take any other food donations cooked on the menu as well and I will be cooking the majority of the meats and other stuff,” Seay said. Hot food can be dropped off the day of the event, and des serts can be dropped off a few days beforehand. Volunteers are also needed to help serve the food and to deliver the meals to those who have pre-ordered delivery. Breakfast with Santa, parade set for Dec. 4 By Erica Jones ejones@dawsonnews.com This December, Dawson County will officially kick off the Christmas season with a Breakfast with Santa, Christmas Parade, Tree Fighting and Jingle Market on Saturday, Dec. 4. The day will start with the annual Breakfast with Santa event at Rock Creek Park. The break fast event will include Santa visit, free children’s activities and ven dors and will run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Dec. 4. Admission to Breakfast with Santa is free, and it includes free activities for children including goodie bags and toys, ornament making and crafts. There will also be several items available for purchase, including breakfast starting at $2, photos starting at $5 and horse-drawn carriage rides starting at $5. There will also be several local vendors with wares available to buy. Purchases are requested to be cash only, and proceeds will benefit local nonprofit organiza tion K.A.R.E. for Kids. Eater in the day, the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce Jingle Market will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dawsonville City Hall. The jingle market will include dozens of vendors selling one-of-a-kind home decor, arts and crafts, gifts and more. There will be a “You Snap” Santa photo opportunity from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Farmer’s Market Pavilion, and food trucks will have food for purchase at the pavilion from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The annual tree lighting cere mony will be at City Hall at 6 p.m. Other fun family activities will begin after the parade and will include music, dancing, cookie decorating, face painting, hot cocoa and coffee.
