Benjamin Brinson
"Ben" Overstreet
Benjamin Brinson “Ben”
Overstreet, 95, of Dawsonville,
passed away peacefully at his home
on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Ben
was born in Orlando, Florida on
December 4, 1926, to the late

Brinson Overstreet. His family
moved to Emanuel County when he
was a young boy and he graduated
from Emanuel County Institute in
1942. He attended North Georgia
College in Dahlonega, when it was
a two-year college. Upon gradua

Georgia College following the end
of the war, he met Mary Joe
Thompson. They were married
after his graduation and moved to
Dawsonville where he farmed from
1949 until 2016. In addition to
farming corn, soybeans, and tall
fescues, Ben raised cattle, hogs,
and poultry on his property and
neighboring land. In 1956, his land
was producing 126 bushels of com

over 200 bushels of com per acre.
During the years, he won over 200

Dimdung
A DCSO warrant from January 2021
alleged that between Aug. 13, 2018 and
Feb. 11, 2019, Dimdung contacted the
victim, a Dawsonville resident over 65
years old, and convinced the person that
their bank account had been hacked.
He allegedly represented himself as
offering services from a company called
“Encore Connect” to help the person.
Over the course of two occasions,
Dimdung allegedly asked the victim to
wire him an amount totaling over
$60,000 to another account for safekeep
ing. The warrant states that he then trans
ferred the funds into his Bank of America
account as a business investment.
A grand jury indicted Dimdung on the
exploiting an elder charge in March
2021. At the end of that month, DCSO
issued an order for his arrest.
Later that spring, Dimdung was
stopped at Virginia’s Dulles International
Airport and arrested while trying to travel
land and the greater Etowah Valley.
He served as a Soil Conservation
Supervisor for more than 40 years
and was honored to be inducted
into the GACDS Hall of Fame in
2005. He was an avid hunter and
fisherman and spent cherished time
at his beloved cabin in Canoochee.
He loved to host his friends and
family there on hunting and fishing
trips. He especially enjoyed teach
ing his grandchildren the art of
hunting and fishing. He and Mary
Joe loved to travel and visit many
of the states as well as the world
abroad. Besides his time spent in
farming, Mr. Overstreet was a char
ter member of the Dawson County
Lions Club, served as a director of
the Dawson County Bank and con
tinued after it was acquired by
United Community Bank, founding
member and vice chairman of the
Etowah Water and Sewer Authority,
vice chairman of the Dawson
County Farm Bureau, served as a
member of the Dawson County
Board of Education and was a
member of the Gainesville Junior
College Board of Directors when it
was founded. Ben was a 50 year
member of the Etowah Lodge #222
F & AM. He and Mary Joe were
members of the First Baptist
Church of Dawsonville. Ben was
also preceded in death by his wife
of 71 years, Mary Joe, and two
brothers, Samuel Joseph Overstreet,
Jr., and Robert Lane Overstreet.
Ben is survived by his daughters
and sons-in-law, Jo Ann and Ragin
Hause, and Jane and Jerry Smith,
both of Dawsonville; grandchil
dren, Jeffrey and Liza Hause,

to Nepal to see family, according to a
motion for bond on Jan. 3, 2022.
He was taken into custody in Virginia
and brought before a Loudoun District
Court judge to address possible extradi
tion to Georgia for the pending charges.
The judge granted Dimdung a $10,000
signature bond so he could come to
Georgia to address the accusations
against him without interstate extradition
measures having to be implemented.
Emails between his counsel and the pros
ecution confirmed those plans.
In a motion for bond in Dawson
County, Dimdung’s attorney argued that
his client has strong ties to Virginia, such
as supporting his family by working in
the IT field and renting out three proper
ties in the state.
The Loudoun District Court has also
taken Dimdung’s passport.
After the motion was submitted,
Superior Court Judge Clint Bearden
granted a $15,000 bail for Dimdung. The
defendant’s total bond has been listed at
$16,700.
DCN will continue to follow this story
and provide updates.
