Dawson County Health
Department awarded mini
grant for car seat education
By Erica Jones

The Dawson County Health
Department has been awarded the 2022
Car Seat Mini-Grant to fund car seat
education in the county, according to a
release by the health department.
The mini grant was awarded to the
department by the Georgia Department
of Public Health Injury Prevention
Program and is funded by the
Governor’s Office of Highway Safety
in an effort to ensure safety for chil
dren in Georgia while riding in motor
vehicles.
Using the funds from the mini grant,
the Dawson County Health Department
and Dawson County Emergency
Medical Services work together to pro
vide car seats and education to finan
cially eligible families in Dawson
County, the release said.
“Since 2007, the education, car seats
and booster seats provided through the
Mini Grant prevented serious injury or
death and saved over 425 of Georgia’s
children who were involved in crash
es,” the release said. “According to the
National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, car seats reduce fatal
injuries by 71 percent among infants
and by 54 percent among children ages
one to four years in passenger cars.”
The release went on to say that
almost three out of every four car seats
are not used correctly, which causes the
children to be at risk. Because of this,
teaching parents and guardians how to
install and use the car seats correctly is
incredibly important too.
“It’s our responsibility to keep out
children safe,” Natasha Young, public
information officer for the District 2
Department of Public Health, said in
the release. “The Car Seat Mini-Grant
is a great opportunity to help our com
munity and help protect our children
from serious injuries or death in motor
vehicle crashes.”
Through the Car Seat Mini-Grant,
agencies supporting over 120 counties
including Dawson are working hard to
keep Georgia’s children safe by helping
families to get their children “buckled
up right, every trip, every time”, the
release said.
“In Dawson County, Dawson County
Health Department and Dawson EMS
educate parents and caregivers on how
to properly install and use car seats,
offer car seat inspections and provide
car seats and booster seats to financial
ly eligible families,” the release said.
