Anywhere he was on the court, Harvey found the space to shoot and took his opportunities well. He was just as effective off the ball, helping set up shots dur ing possessions and showing his abilities as a vocal leader. The first quarter ended with the Spartans leading 19-17, but the constant offensive pressure by the Tigers paid off, turning a two point deficit into a 38-29 lead at the half. More of the same suc cess allowed Dawson County to lead by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, but a late push by West Hall closed the gap to 60-53. The Tigers would not allow another push by the Spartans for the remain der of the game, scoring 13 points within the first four minutes of the final quarter. Harvey and com pany would close the door on the defensive end, only allowing West Hall to score eight points in the fourth quarter. The boys team secured the fifth seed in the region after this win and will play on Tuesday, Feb. 8, against East Forsyth, who the Tigers won against previously. FROM 1B Tennis relied on a solid return game to counter her East Hall opponent, eventually win ning 6-4, 6-1. Marlee Gaddis would round out the singles competition on the girls team with a win as well. On the boys team, the energetic Grant Ledbetter had the inverse experience of Smith, facing a resilient opponent in the second set after comfortably winning the first. Ledbetter had the momentum for most of the match through his powerful fore hand, but a few unforced errors allowed the East Hall player to inch closer as the match wore on. Eventually, Ledbetter would pull through with a 6-2, 6-4 win. Chase Cofield made quicker work of his opponent, cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 vic tory by way of his strength and crafti ness at the net. Zach Friday would finish up the boys singles competition with a 6-1, 6-2 win. For both the girls and boys teams, their winning ways continued in dou bles. All four pairings won their match es, with neither boys pairing dropping a set. The DCHS tennis teams have an extended break before their next slate of matches, which will occur on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Chestatee High School. “I think it’ll be a good thing to give us a little more practice time,” Allen said. “Hopefully we get some good weather in the next couple of weeks...it’ll be good for us overall to get a lot of prac tices in.” Rio White Dawson County News Chase Cofield prepares to hit a forehand shot during his match on Tuesday, Feb. 1. FROM 1B Wrestling Four Dawson County wrestlers finished third in their weight classes, including senior Holden Martin, who secured a victory in his third-place match on a fall with 47 seconds remaining. The other third-place finishers were Alex Stewart, Luke Lowe, and Isaiah Lail. Stewart fin ished the night accruing the most team points for the Tigers, with 15. Fourth-place finishers included Noah Smith, Riley Westbrooks, and Noah Roberson. Senior Trevor Cowart placed fifth in his weight class but was selected as an alternate for the state sectionals. The State Sectionals were held at Lumpkin County High School and split into two sections — the first held on Friday, Feb. 4, at 5:30 p.m., while the second held Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. Wrestlers who finished in the top six of their respec tive weight classes moved on to the State Finals in Macon. “Obviously we are step ping up the competition this weekend so it will be exciting to see how we rise to the occasion,” Haynes said. “I feel like we do have a chance for a couple to move on to the State Finals next week, but it will be a tough row to hoe.” At the State Sectionals, Whalen finished sixth in his weight class to earn a spot at the State Finals, while Lowe placed sev enth in his class to become a first alternate. “Whalen wrestled through a tough tourna ment while battling through injuries to quali fy,” Haynes said. “We are really excited, since he is a senior.” The State Finals will take place from Thursday, Feb. 10 through Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Macon Centreplex.
