Weeks after winning its second
consecutive Mountain League
Dual Championship, the Dawson
County Middle School wrestling
team celebrated with a pizza
party and activity day on Friday,
Feb. 25.
For head coach Andrew
Grigsby, the celebration was a
well-earned privilege for those
who helped build the team’s suc
cess.
According to Grigsby, the team
totaled 50 players and had a
heightened sense of competition
that helped sustain the quality and
tenacity the team played with.
While many players are just
starting out, the veteran eighth-
graders established the standards
to which each person on the team

would be held.
This foundation of leadership
not only allows the middle school
team to grow, but also develops
the future of the high school pro
gram.
“There’s a level of respect
because I let them be themselves
and I also push them to be better,”
Grigsby said. “When I ask them
to be quiet and listen and do the
things they are supposed to, the
eighth graders...take more of a
leadership role. It’s a cool thing to
watch these kids get older and
grow.”

Oglethorpe on the board first.
Harvey settled in quickly, inducing
a groundout and striking out the
next batter before the remaining
runner was caught stealing third
base.
Dawson County’s deficit did not
last for long, as they scored two
runs in the top of the second inning
by stealing home plate on a wild
pitch and forcing a walk with the
bases loaded.
Harvey would not allow another
run during the game but did allow
at least one baserunner every
inning except for the third.
In the face of this recurring pres
sure, Harvey ended each of the
final four innings with a strikeout,
including back-to-back strikeouts
to end the fifth and sixth innings.
In the final seventh inning, a two-
out error by Dawson County put
the winning run up to bat, but
Harvey closed out the game to give
his team the victory.
The Tigers played twice
Saturday, defeating Sprayberry 6-2
in the early matchup before falling
6-3 to St. Francis in the later game.
In the first game, leadoff man
Horner led the way for Dawson
County. His 3-for-4 hitting perfor
mance included a double, triple and
three RBI.
Leading the way from the
mound in that game was Davis
Glass, who gave up one run in five
innings with five strikeouts.
Closing out the game in the final
two innings was Jacob Pass, who
also gave up one run with a pair of
strikeouts.
The Tigers led 3-1 after five
innings but placed a firm grasp on
the game with a three-run sixth.
Dawson County closed out the
weekend with a loss to St. Francis,
who scored four runs in the final
inning to break a 2-2 deadlock.
Nick Mullinax and Luke
Mulberry led the way offensively
for the Tigers with a pair of hits
each, including a home run by
Mulberry.
Mullinax pitched the majority of
that game, giving up one ran in five
innings. The relief pitching and
defense struggled late in the game,
as St. Francis took advantage of
four walks and four errors to help
them win.
With the two wins over the
weekend, Dawson County tied for
first place in their pool group.
The Tigers will play twice this
week, traveling to Rabun County
on Wednesday, March 2, before
coming back home to face Johnson
on Thursday, March 3.

Golf
coach Will Anglin said. “Many
of us have been working since
November to make this happen,
and it was great to see all the
hard work pay off.”
For Anglin and girls team
head coach Tyler Baker, the
tournament showed the strong
support the Dawson County
community has for the golf
teams as they begin their com
petitive seasons soon.
Fast season, the boys team
finished as runner-up at the
Area Tournament and in third
place at the State Tournament.
Four of last year’s six starters
will return and the team will be
led by seniors Alex Hughes,
Seth Jackson and Christian
Roper.
The girls team is compara
tively younger, consisting of
one freshman and a trio of
sophomores led by Samantha
Dewendt. Just weeks before the
Tiger Invitational, the girls
team was awarded a $600 grant
from the Georgia Women’s
Golf Association.
The golf teams are set to
begin their seasons on
Thursday, Feb. 24, against East
Forsyth, hosted by Chestatee
Golf Club. The boys team will
participate in several tourna
ments this season, beginning
with one hosted by Hampton
Golf Village in Cumming on
Saturday, Feb. 26.
