Students from the
Dawson County High
School Future Farmers of
America group recently
celebrated FFA Week,
hosting six days of FFA
Week activities to teach
younger students about
agriculture and about FFA.
According to FFA advis
er Keith Pankey, students
in kindergarten through
seventh grade from all of
the county’s schools took
part in AG days, in which
the students were invited to
the DCHS Ag department
and rotated through stu
dent-led agricultural career
stations.
“The stations ranged
from poultry, greenhouse,
animal science, alternative
livestock, machinery, dairy,
beef and others,” Pankey
said.
The students also took
part in fun activities like
“twinning day,” “Maroon
day” and “wacky day” at
the high school level,
Pankey added.
According to Pankey, the
FFA Week events were
facilitated with help from
one of the local poultry
producers, a member’s par
ent, an alumni member and
the local Farm Bureau. The
students in FFA were given
a thank-you banner, which
is now hanging in the live
stock bam, from students
at Robinson Elementary
School.
“The DCHS FFA thanks
all of our community sup
porters of our program,”
Pankey said.

County’s Whitlow Elementary School and
charitable organizations Glory, Hope &

and the North Georgia Crappie Anglers
charity.
“The Foundation Board approved
$14,240 for local charitable organizations,
$11,613 in Bright Ideas classroom grants
and $30,000 for local college foundation
scholarships,” the release said.
The grants were funded through Sawnee
EMC’s Operation Round Up program,
which allows participating Sawnee EMC
members to round up their electric bill to
the next dollar. According to the release,
approximately 15,000 members round up
their electric bill each month, and each par
ticipating member contributes an average
of about $6 each year.
“The money collected through
Operation Round Up is directed to the
Sawnee Foundation and 100 percent is
then administered in a series of grants by
its voluntary Board of Directors,” the
release said.
Since Operation Round Up’s inception
in 2003, the release said that these small
but generous donations have allowed the
Foundation board to donate over $3.8 mil
lion back into the local communities.
“Sawnee EMC members have a unique
opportunity to support Operation Round
Up and give back to their local communi
ties,” Director of External Affairs Cindy
Badgett said in the release.
