Recently, three Dawson
County businesses came
together to surprise and
honor Lieutenant Jack
Zappendorf, a Dawson
County local who was
passing through his home
town on his way to his
next assignment.
According to Seanie
Zappendorf, an active
member of the Dawson
County community and
mother to Lt. Zappendorf,
local business owner
Graham Ehmann from
GDE Aesthetics and Card
My Yard Dawsonville
General Manager
Elizabeth Barr heard that
their friend’s son was
coming home to
Dawsonville and would
have just one day to pack
up before leaving for his
next duty station in
Germany.
Knowing this informa
tion, Ehmann and Barr
decided to surprise Lt.
Zappendorf and his family
with a sign outside of one
of his favorite restaurants,
Kani House in
Dawsonville. With the res
taurant owners’ approval
and support, the group
installed the signs outside
of Kani House, where Lt.
Zappendorf would be eat
ing with his family before
leaving for his next army
assignment.
Seanie Zappendorf said
that her son was very sur
prised to see the signs in
his support, and that
friends from all over the
county began reaching out
to her and her family
when they saw the signs
and knew who they were
in honor of.
“Lt. Zappendorf and his
family are grateful for the
thoughtfulness, generosity
and support of his next
journey overseas,” Seanie
Zappendorf said.
Lt. Zappendorf and his
family have always been
active members of their
community. As a senior in
high school, he received
the Outstanding Citizen of
Dawson County award for
his service in the commu
nity, especially for his
work with RIC Rack food
bank. He received a four-
year ROTC scholarship
and graduated from The
Citadel, Military College
of South Carolina at the
age of 21.
Upon graduating, he
was commissioned as an
Army officer and received
his first choice of the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers.
He was sent to the U.S.
Army engineering School
at Fort Leonard Wood in
Missouri, and after gradu
ating he was given just a
few days to travel home
from Missouri and one
day to pack up and be
ready to travel to his next
assignment in Germany.
