Hundreds attend egg hunt in honor of Kaleb Duckworth
By Julia Fechter

As people flocked to
Dahlonega’s Yahoola
Creek Park Sunday after
noon, the importance of a
caring community
became clear during the
first annual “Ducks Egg
Hunt.”
The Easter event was
hosted by Love Kaleb
Inc., a nonprofit that par
ents Amanda and Tommy
Duckworth started in
honor of their late son,
Kaleb Duckworth, to give
back to the Lumpkin and
Dawson-area community
while keeping his memo
ry alive.
Tommy said he, his wife
and the nonprofit wouldn’t
have been able to put on
such an event by them
selves without the help of
the dozens of volunteers
who attended.
“We believe now, more
than ever, that our com
munity is what means the
most,” he said.
“It’s about getting fami
lies out here,” Amanda
said, to which he replied,
“You’ve got to start with
[engaging] families and
work out from there.

circumstances.”
Vehicles ranging from
pickup trucks to a semi
tractor to motorcycles
made an appearance, driv
en by people ranging from
locals to those from as far
away as North Carolina.
What their drivers all
had in common was hear
ing Kaleb’s story and
wanting to come out and
show support, Amanda
said.
Along the bustling park
road, children giddily
waited for colorful plastic
goodies or a picture with
the Easter Bunny. Others
eagerly got their faces
painted or indulged in rab
bit-themed cupcakes.
As part of the event,
there was also a cakewalk,
supplied with baked goods
made and donated in
honor of Kaleb.
Some of the cakes bore
icing with Kaleb’s image
or quotes like his signa
ture ‘It’ll be a’ight.’”
During the event,
Kaleb’s older brother,
Tristin, even donned a yel
low duck suit and on top
of it wore one of Kaleb’s
favorite multicolored but
ton-up shirts.

costume, to the delight of
many youngsters.
Just as the Duckworths
spent quality time with
their children, the family
hopes to keep creating
opportunities for others to
do the same.
“It helps our hearts to
see the rest of these kids
out here hanging out with
their families,” Tommy
said, smiling.

Dawson County High School has recently been
named by the Georgia Department of Education as an
AP STEM and AP Challenge school for 2022.
According to a release by the Georgia Department
of Education, Advanced Placement (AP) Honor
Schools are named each year based on the results of
the previous year’s AP courses and exams. AP exams
are administered by the College Board and allow
Georgia students to access college-level learning while
in high school. Students who receive a score of 3, 4 or
5 on an AP exam can receive college credit for it.
The Georgia Department of Education began recog
nizing AP Honor Schools in 2008, and schools are
named in eight categories.
This year, Dawson County High School was named
an AP Honor School in two categories: AP Challenge
Schools, or schools with enrollments of 900 or fewer
students and students testing in English, math, science
and social studies; and AP STEM Schools, or schools
with a minimum of five students testing in at least four
AP STEM courses.
According to the release, State School
Superintendent Richard Woods named a total of 239
AP Honor Schools for 2022.
“We are committed to expanding opportunities for
Georgia students, including in advanced and accelerat
ed coursework,” Woods said in the release. “I offer my
sincere congratulations to each of this year’s AP Honor
Schools, and thank each teacher, student and school
leader who worked hard to create strong AP opportuni
ties in these Georgia schools.”
