Anglin named girls basketball head coach
Anglin has been fixture at school for many years, in both teaching and coaching capacity

On Wednesday, April 27, DCHS
Athletic Director Bradley Fowler
announced that Will Anglin would
become the next head coach of the
Lady Tigers basketball team.
Anglin has been a fixture at the
school for many years, in both a
teaching and coaching capacity. A
2013 graduate of DCHS and former
member of the boys basketball
team, Anglin has served in a variety
of roles, including as current head
boys golf coach and assistant boys
basketball coach for the past four
seasons.
“It means everything to me,”
Anglin said. “This has been a dream
of mine since I graduated from
Dawson in 2013. Now, having the
opportunity to pour back into a pro
gram that did so much for me is
incredible. Dawson women’s bas
ketball has a rich history of success
and I am honored to be a part of it.”
For Anglin, his journey to a head
coaching position at his alma mater
is a culmination of his dedication to
DCHS.
Beginning his coaching career at
the young age of 16, Anglin has
taken that responsibility to heart,
joining the DCHS boys basketball
staff as a community coach in 2014
and spending three years in that role.
He has also become highly
regarded as a teacher, beginning his
classroom journey in 2018 after
graduating from the University of
North Georgia with a degree in
Secondary Education Mathematics.
He has twice been named Best
Teacher at the Best of Dawson
awards.
“We are super excited to have
coach Anglin lead our women’s bas
ketball program,” Fowler said. “He
has a great plan and I cannot wait
for him to get started.”

The Dawson County boys
golf team competed at the
Class AAA Area 3
Tournament at Apple
Mountain Golf Club on
Monday, April 25, shooting a
season low score of 299 to
earn a spot at the AAA State
Championships.
Alex Hughes led the way
with a score of 1-under 71 as
the Tigers finished third at
the area tournament behind
Westminster and Cherokee
Bluff, with the latter finishing
just two strokes ahead of
DCHS.
“Our guys battled like
crazy,” head coach Will
Anglin said. “Many of them
started their rounds poorly
and they continued to grind it
out. I was most impressed
with their determination.”
That determination was
needed on a day that had the
Tigers play against a combi
nation of teams from Regions
5 and 7, including rivals
North Hall.
Hughes played by that
example, beginning his day
with three consecutive
bogeys before playing the
remainder of the course at
4-under par.
Another resilient display
was shown by Christian
Roper, who had some early
struggles before finding a
groove on the back nine. He
played the final four holes
with a birdie-par-birdie-eagle
finish to end his day with a
score of l-over 73.
As the day progressed and
the temperature increased,
the Tigers got hotter and out
played many opponents,
including the North Hall
team that had played in two
close regular-season tourna
ments against DCHS.
With Jeremy Ray and Will
McNatt rounding out the
scoring at 76 and 79, respec
tively, the Tigers finished
with all four players shooting
under 80 and breaking an
aggregate of 300 for the first
time this season.
“This was one of the
clutchest performances I
have ever seen as a coach,”
Anglin said. “It’s [one] thing
to have other teams struggle
and give you a spot in the
state tournament, but in our
case everyone played great.”
The girls golf team also
competed at the Area 3
Tournament, with Samantha
Dewendt scoring an 83 to
finish in fifth place individu
ally. With the girls team
playing during the hottest
part of the day, they strug
gled early and were not able
to qualify for the State
Championships.
Despite this, Anglin and
girls coach Tyler Baker will
have all players returning
next season, including the
rising junior Dewendt.
The boys team will be
looking to replicate last sea
son’s success at the state
level, where they finished
third. Anglin mentioned that
his team’s performance at the
Area Tournament showed
that they would not be denied
in spite of the early adversity.
Next up for the team will
be a trip to Augusta on May
17 and 18, where they will
play at Bartram Trail Golf
Club. Anglin will be making
sure the team is prepared for
the challenge.
“Our biggest challenge
will be finding where we
need to miss and how to
approach each hole,” Anglin
said. “We expect the Augusta
greens to be very fast with a
lot of hills. I’m sure the
course will be in great condi
tion and it will be a great
opportunity for our guys to
compete against the best in
the state.”
Season ends
for DCHS
baseball at
state playoffs
By Rio White

After a 19-win season and their first Class
AAA state playoff appearance in five years,
the Dawson County baseball team ended their
season with a first-round playoff loss to
Redan on Friday, April 29.
The Tigers traveled down to play the
Raiders in a doubleheader that showcased the
resolve of the visitors to hang in against a hot-
hitting opponent.
Redan got out to an early lead in the first
game, leading by as much as 13-1 before the
Tigers showed their offensive prowess.
In the top of the fifth inning, the bats caught
fire and DCHS would score six runs. Leading
the charge was Luke Mulberry, who would
lead his team with three hits in the game.
Lour other players would have a pair of hits
while Julian Homer led the team with three
runs batted in.
Another couple of runs in the seventh
inning would reduce the Tigers’ deficit to
13-9, which would remain as the final score.
After a slow start, the visitors showed they
could compete offensively with a Redan side
that relied on their power hitting.
Lor head coach Dwayne Sapp, the team’s
resolve and effort to get to the playoffs proved
that they had earned their place, regardless of
how they matched up against Redan.
“The senior leadership was critical during
the season to weather the highs and lows of a
three-month season. They did a terrific job
handling this,” Sapp said. “I think the only
thing that worried the coaches [about Redan]
was the experience of the team. They had a lot
of veteran players that have been in these situ
ations and they were at home.”
The second game would prove to be much
closer and would once again display the resil
iency of the DCHS roster.
While a couple of early home runs by
Redan could have demoralized the Tigers, the
patience of the team would pay off in the third
inning.
Trailing 5-0, the Tigers showed discipline at
the plate and scored four runs to launch them
selves right back into the game.

The Dawson County
Rotary Club hosted its
31st annual golf tourna
ment at Crystal Tails Golf
Club on Monday, April 25.
Every year, the service-
based organization holds
the golf event to help raise
funds for its many com

This year’s event came
just days after the Rotary
Club attended the Rotary
District 6910 conference
in Greenville, S.C., and
won several awards,
including Large Club of
the Year and the
Environmental Award.
After coming back to
Georgia, the club went
straight back to work and
put together an event that
had broad support from
the community.
According to Rotary
Club president-elect
Nicole Stewart, Monday’s
event raised over $65,000,
which is the most the club
has ever raised at the
annual tournament.
“It was such a great
event and truly a team
effort,” Stewart said. “We
have such a great club
with outstanding members
who go above and beyond
for Dawson County.”
At the tournament, par
ticipants could take part in
a longest drive contest and
putting contest, as well as
play the course individual
ly or in a team.
In the team competition,
the Carla Boutin State
Earn team was the Gross
