Hughes prepared for strong state showing
Dawson senior has been pivotal in helping golf team grow into one of best in region
By Rio White

Over the past two years,
senior Alex Hughes has
helped the Dawson
County golf team grow
into one of the strongest in
its region. The team placed
third in the AAA Area 3
tournament and are pre
paring for next week’s
State Tournament, where
they finished third last sea
son.
Hughes has been a part
of a team that has
improved both in skill and
depth in his two seasons,
having began his career
with the Tigers playing
alongside his brother Alex
and Will Howard as the
most consistent players.
But this season, fellow
seniors Christian Roper
and Seth Jackson, as well
as regular starters Will
McNatt and Jeremy Ray,
have all stepped up to help
lead the team to success.
For Hughes, the effort
and initiative put in by so
many players has created a
team chemistry that made
his season even more
memorable.
“It’s been super fun,”
Hughes said. “Last year,
we didn’t do many outings
outside of golf, but this
year I’ve done almost
weekly outings with all the
guys.”
As Hughes has
improved his scores in his
senior year, so has the
team. He shot a team-best
l-under 71 at this season’s
Area Tournament as the
team scored a season low
of 299.

ter than his round at last

Late spin out thwarts Elliott
after two top-5 stage finishes
By Rio White

For just the fourth time
in 13 races this season,
Chase Elliott finished
outside the top 10 as a
blown left-rear tire with
70 laps to go doomed
him to a 29th place finish
in the AdventHealth 400
at Kansas Speedway.
Just as he had moved
back into the top five for
the third time in the race,
Elliott spun out rapidly
and managed to avoid
collisions on the way
down to the grass.
By the time he had
come to a full stop, the
entire carcass of the tire
had blown away and his
day was effectively over.
Before all of that,
Elliott had put together a
